The Indian corporate world was left reeling in June 2025 with the unexpected passing of Sunjay Kapur, Chairman of Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar). Kapur, a prominent figure in the automotive industry, died at the age of 53 after collapsing during a polo match in England. His death was attributed to a sudden heart attack, reportedly triggered by a severe allergic reaction—possibly from a bee sting—while he was playing polo. The tragic incident not only shocked the business community but also brought together his family, including his ex-wife Karisma Kapoor and their children, for his funeral and prayer meetings in New Delhi.

Kapur’s leadership at Sona Comstar was transformative. Taking charge after his father’s passing in 2015, he steered the company toward becoming a global mobility technology leader, with a strong focus on innovation, sustainability, and electric vehicle components. Under his guidance, Sona Comstar expanded its footprint to multiple countries and reported significant growth, especially in the electric vehicle sector. His sudden demise has left a void, prompting the company to swiftly address questions of succession and future strategy.

Priya Sachdev Kapur Joins Sona Comstar Board:

In the wake of Sunjay Kapur’s passing, Sona Comstar announced key changes to its leadership structure. Notably, Priya Sachdev Kapur, Sunjay’s wife, was inducted as an Additional Non-Executive Director on the company’s board. This move is seen as a step toward ensuring continuity and stability during a period of transition. Priya’s appointment enables her to provide strategic guidance to the board without being involved in the daily operations of the company.

Priya Sachdev, an entrepreneur in her own right, has long been associated with the Kapur family’s business interests. Her induction onto the board comes at a crucial time for Sona Comstar, which is navigating both the emotional impact of Sunjay’s loss and the practical challenges of leadership succession. The company also appointed Jeffrey Mark Overly as the new Chairman, while Vivek Vikram Singh continues as CEO, ensuring that operational leadership remains steady.

Sona Comstar’s Growth and Global Presence:

Sona Comstar, headquartered in Gurugram, has grown into a major player in the automotive technology sector, with a strong emphasis on electric vehicle components. The company operates 12 manufacturing plants across India, Mexico, Serbia, and the United States, and employs more than 5,000 people. For the financial year ending March 2025, Sona Comstar reported a 12% increase in revenue, reaching ₹3,500 crore, with approximately 36% of its revenue coming from electric vehicle components.

Sunjay Kapur’s vision was instrumental in positioning Sona Comstar as a global leader. He was also active in industry bodies, serving as Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Northern Region, where he championed industrial growth, policy advocacy, and innovation. His sudden passing has been widely mourned across the automotive and business communities, with tributes highlighting his passion for both industry and sport.

Family, Legacy, and the Road Ahead:

The passing of Sunjay Kapur brought together his blended family in a moment of grief and reflection. His ex-wife, Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor, and their two children, Samaira and Kiaan, attended the funeral and prayer meetings, alongside Priya Sachdev and her son with Sunjay. The emotional gathering underscored the personal loss felt by his family, friends, and business associates.

As Sona Comstar moves forward, the company faces the dual challenge of honoring Sunjay Kapur’s legacy while adapting to new leadership. The appointment of Priya Sachdev Kapur to the board is a significant step in this direction, symbolizing both continuity and change. With a strong management team in place and a clear strategic vision, Sona Comstar is poised to build on its founder’s achievements and continue its growth trajectory in the rapidly evolving automotive sector.

The coming months will be crucial for the company as it navigates this transition. Industry watchers will be closely observing how Sona Comstar maintains its momentum and upholds the values and vision that Sunjay Kapur instilled during his tenure.
