Following the 2024 U.S. presidential election, many of Taylor Swift’s devoted fans are abandoning X, previously known as Twitter, in favor of Bluesky. Their departure stems from X’s increasingly toxic environment after Elon Musk’s purchase of the platform and his open support for Donald Trump. Musk, who donated heavily to Trump’s political campaigns and used X to amplify Trump’s messages, has become a polarizing figure. For Swifties, whose values often center around inclusivity and positivity, Musk’s political alignment with Trump has created a stark contrast to what they stand for, prompting them to move to Bluesky, where they feel more comfortable.
One active Swiftie on Bluesky, Justin, shared his reasons for leaving X. “I love the idea of building a new community here,” he said, emphasizing his desire not to support Musk’s agenda. Like many, he expressed discomfort with Musk’s open backing of Trump, which he felt clashed with Taylor Swift’s values.
Swift’s Political Support Sparks Tensions on X
While Swifties are diverse in their political views, many align with Taylor Swift’s public endorsements, such as her support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race. This endorsement was triggered by the use of AI-generated images implying that Swift had supported Trump, which stirred tension among Swifties on X. Musk’s response to Swift’s endorsement, which included a bizarre comment about giving her a child and guarding her cats, further alienated Swift’s fanbase on the platform. Musk, known for his controversial statements on population growth and family planning, has also made headlines with his personal life, which has led to even more backlash from Swift’s fans.
Harassment and Hostility on X Drives Swifties Away
As the political atmosphere on X grew more hostile following Trump’s win, Swifties began to experience increasing harassment. Irene Kim, an organizer with Swifties for Kamala, noted a surge in misogynistic attacks on fans, many of whom were targeted by violent messages and threats from Trump supporters. Research has shown that hate speech and disinformation skyrocketed on X after Musk’s takeover, with white supremacist rhetoric gaining traction, especially in the aftermath of Trump’s electoral victory. This toxic environment, further exacerbated by recent changes to X’s blocking feature, made many Swifties feel unsafe and unwelcome.
Kim explained, “That’s the kind of rhetoric we want to get away from,” adding that the platform’s new feature, which allows users to view profiles of those who have blocked them, created even more opportunities for harassment. She and other Swifties felt that X had become a “hellscape,” pushing them to look for a safer, more positive platform.
Bluesky Provides a Safer, Supportive Space
In contrast to X, Swifties have found a refreshing sense of community on Bluesky. The platform, designed to foster more personal connections and less divisive discourse, has quickly become the new home for many fans. “The Swifties are here, and I, for one, welcome our new overlords,” one Bluesky user joked, capturing the lightheartedness many Swifties feel as they build a new space on the platform.
Kim described Bluesky as “literally a social media app again,” where users can engage in meaningful conversations without the constant tension found on X. In just a few days, Swifties have created nearly 200 “starter packs” on Bluesky, which are curated lists of Swift-related accounts for new users to follow, helping them quickly immerse themselves in the community.
