Here’s the thing. The Tata Sierra isn’t just another SUV name making a comeback. For a lot of Indian car buyers, it’s nostalgia on wheels. And now, Tata Motors is giving that nostalgia a serious upgrade.
The Tata Sierra EV is officially expected to go on sale in India in early 2026, and the biggest reveal so far is a dual-motor setup that enables all-wheel drive. Yes, an electric Sierra with AWD. That alone tells you Tata isn’t playing it safe with this one.
Dual Motors, Real AWD, No Gimmicks
Tata Motors has confirmed that the Sierra EV will use two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear. This gives it an e-AWD system rather than a software-based workaround.
What this really means is better grip, stronger acceleration, and more confidence when the road conditions aren’t perfect. For a brand that built the Sierra’s original image around freedom and versatility, AWD feels less like a feature add-on and more like a statement.
It also quietly puts the Sierra EV in a more premium, capability-focused space than many electric SUVs currently on sale in India.
Range Expected to Cross 500 Km
Under the skin, the Sierra EV is expected to share its battery technology with the upcoming Tata Harrier EV. If that holds true, a driving range of over 500 km on a single charge is very much on the cards.
There’s also strong chatter around bidirectional charging. That means the Sierra EV could potentially power external devices or even supply electricity back to a home. Not confirmed yet, but if Tata delivers on this, it’ll be a big win for real-world usability.
ICE Sierra Is Already Here, AWD Still Possible
While the EV is getting most of the attention, Tata has already launched the new Sierra in ICE form. Prices start at Rs. 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom), bookings open on December 16, 2025, and customer deliveries begin in mid-January 2026.
The engine lineup includes:
-
A 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol
-
A more powerful 1.5-litre TGDi petrol
-
A 1.5-litre diesel with strong torque output
Manual, torque converter automatic, and dual-clutch automatic gearboxes are all available. Interestingly, Tata hasn’t ruled out an AWD option for the ICE Sierra either. That suggests development may already be underway for a future update.
Old-School Soul, Modern Cabin
Design-wise, Tata has nailed the balance. The new Sierra keeps its upright stance, boxy proportions, and large glass area, clearly inspired by the original. But everything else is thoroughly modern.
Inside, you get a triple-screen setup, Level 2 ADAS, ventilated seats, a JBL sound system with Dolby Atmos, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera, terrain modes, and automatic climate control. It’s premium without trying too hard.
The Sierra is built on Tata’s modular ARGOS platform, which supports ICE and EV powertrains and leaves room for future variants and layouts.
Why the Sierra EV Matters
The Sierra EV isn’t just another electric SUV launch. It’s Tata Motors saying that electric cars can have character, capability, and emotional pull.
With AWD, long range, and a design that respects its past, the Sierra EV could end up being one of the most talked-about electric SUVs in India when it arrives in early 2026. And honestly, it feels like the Sierra is finally coming home just with a lot more voltage this time.
