Tech Revolution: Jony Ive is Developing a New Device with OpenAI
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

Reports confirm that Jony Ive is developing a new device with OpenAI, and it could redefine the way users interact with AI-powered products. The confirmation comes from a recent profile on Ive published by The New York Times, nearly a year after reports of their potential collaboration first surfaced.

While specific details about the project are scarce, it has been revealed that the two met through Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky. The venture is currently funded by Ive himself and Emerson Collective, a company owned by Laurene Powell Jobs. According to reports, the project could raise to $1 billion by the end of the year, although previous rumors suggesting a $1 billion investment from SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son were not mentioned.

The team working on the device is small but experienced, with only 10 employees so far. Among them are Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, who both worked alongside Ive on the iPhone. Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom, is leading the creative side of the project. The team is currently based out of a 32,000-square-foot office in San Francisco, part of a $90 million real estate acquisition by Ive.

What Could the New Device Be?

Although details are still being figured out, reports suggest the new device could revolutionize computing by utilizing AI to perform complex tasks that traditional software struggles with. The use of generative AI could allow for a more user-friendly and intuitive interface, with the ability to understand and act on complicated commands.

As Jony Ive is developing a new device with OpenAI, there is growing speculation about how this project will impact the tech industry. Ive and Altman reportedly believe AI could usher in a new kind of device, potentially drawing inspiration from touchscreen technology and the iPhone’s early designs. While the specific form of the product remains unclear, there’s speculation that the device could interact with users in more intuitive ways, using sensors, cameras, and microphones to anticipate needs.

Aiming to Revolutionize Computing

Ive and Altman are not the only ones pursuing AI-driven devices. Meta, under Mark Zuckerberg, has also invested billions into developing AI-powered augmented reality glasses, betting that extended reality (XR) will define the future of computing.

However, AI devices have struggled in the past. Previous products like the Humane AI pin and Rabbit r1 failed to make a significant impact. Ive and Altman will need to overcome skepticism surrounding AI and demonstrate how their device can genuinely improve users’ lives.

The fact that Jony Ive is developing a new device with OpenAI has sparked excitement due to his legacy of creating iconic products. Ive’s reputation as the mastermind behind Apple’s most iconic products, like the iPhone and MacBook, suggests he may be well-positioned to succeed. Despite previous controversies over design choices, Ive’s innovations have consistently set new industry standards. As the project progresses, it remains to be seen whether Ive and Altman can create a device that will truly redefine how we interact with technology.

Lack of Clear Vision and Market Relevance

One of the major issues is the lack of specifics about the device. While the project promises to use AI to create a new kind of computing experience, there are no clear details about what this product will be or how it will revolutionize the market. Descriptions suggest that the device will rely heavily on AI to anticipate user needs and simplify complex tasks, but these ideas are somewhat abstract. Without concrete details, assessing the practicality or appeal of such a device is difficult.

Moreover, the tech world has seen other ambitious AI-driven products fail. Devices like the Humane AI pin and Rabbit r1, which tried to use AI to create new user experiences, were met with poor reception due to technical issues and lack of demand. This suggests that simply integrating AI is not enough to guarantee success.
