Tesla Bets on AI to Drive "Nutty High" Productivity

Elon Musk claims that Tesla will increase the number of employees despite the fact that many tech companies are cutting their workforce in the name of artificial intelligence. The CEO thinks that AI and robotics will make each employee much more productive, not replace them.

Elon Musk expressed this opinion during the Abundance Summit 2026 on March 11. He discussed the future of manufacturing and the role of robots in creating other robots with entrepreneur Peter Diamandis. The CEO was clear about his intentions. Tesla will not cut its workforce.

“We’re not planning any layoffs or reductions in personnel,” Musk said. “In fact, we will increase our headcount.” At the same time, he expects productivity to rise at a pace rarely seen in manufacturing. Musk said the “output per human at Tesla is going to get nutty high.”

Musk believes AI tools will reshape how work happens inside factories. Instead of replacing workers, they will support them. Tesla has already invested heavily in automation. Its factories use advanced robotics, machine vision systems, and AI software to handle tasks like welding, assembly, and quality checks.

The next step is humanoid robotics. Tesla is developing the Tesla Optimus robot to handle repetitive physical tasks on factory floors.

These robots may move parts, assist with assembly, and fill labor gaps in production lines. Musk believes that when humans and robots work together, output will surge.

The Vision of Growth vs. Tech’s Wave of Layoffs

A worker supported by AI systems and robots can supervise more tasks at once. This allows one person to oversee operations that once required many workers.

Musk argues this will not reduce jobs at Tesla. Instead, it will expand what each employee can accomplish.

Musk’s comments stand out against a wave of layoffs across the tech industry. Many companies now cut jobs as they adopt AI tools.

Software firm Atlassian recently announced plans to reduce its workforce by about 10%. Payments company Block has also cut jobs, with reports suggesting up to 40% of roles could disappear over time.

Leaders at these companies say AI can perform many tasks once handled by engineers, support staff, and analysts. Automation tools now write code, answer customer questions, and process data.

These changes push firms to shrink teams while maintaining output. Tesla takes a different view. Musk says the company will rely on AI to increase productivity while still hiring more people.

This approach reflects Tesla’s focus on physical manufacturing rather than software services. Electric vehicle production, battery manufacturing, and robotics still require a mix of automation and human oversight. Musk believes robotics and AI will reshape the broader economy as well.

If machines produce goods at very low cost, supply will rise sharply. When supply grows faster than demand, prices often fall. Musk expects this process to create deflation across many industries. In that world, basic goods and services may become far cheaper than today.

Musk believes governments may respond with some form of universal income support. “We’ll basically just issue money to people,” he said, referring to the concept of universal basic income.

Elon Musk Plans for an AI-Driven Future

The idea is simple. If automation produces most goods, society may distribute income so people can still buy what the economy produces.

There are many economic experts who debate whether this system will work or not. There may also be problems of inflation and motivation to work. There may also be a chance that people will not have to work through machines like robots.

For now, Tesla Motors is focusing on increasing its production and creating new technology. They are still increasing their production of electric cars while also developing new technology like robots and artificial intelligence.

Elon Musk thinks that robots will allow them to make “many more cars, many more batteries, and many more machines” while also increasing their workforce instead of decreasing it. Therefore, if the predictions made by Elon Musk come true, then Tesla Motors will show how artificial intelligence can transform the industry. It will show how artificial intelligence can make people do more instead of less.
