Jack Sweeney, a student, who now occupies the title of a jet tracker, has another goal – tracking personal jets and their owners, including Elon Musk, Taylor Swift or Mark Zuckerberg. But the worst was the day when his accounts were banned from Meta, which owns Instagram and Threads.
What Went Down?
Instagram owner Meta had to shut down Sweeney’s accounts as it was concerned about physical safety. It was done in compliance with Meta’s independent Oversight Board advice. Of course, Sweeney realizes that privacy is the big problem here and still, he wishes Meta at least, to notify him or give him a hint about the suspension.
He can’t look at that and not get the nagging thought that maybe some big public figure was involved in this. Well here’s the kicker—he had no idea who it could be. High-profile personalities such as Elon Musk and Taylor Swift have publicly been uncomfortable with Sweeney’s tracking activities with Swift referring to it as stalking and harassing behavior .
Racing Into Trouble with the Big Names
Jack Sweeney is not a stranger to celebrities. Back in January, he got a letter from Taylor Swift’s lawyer demanding that he cease and desist because she considered it stalking. And Elon Musk? He said he shut down Sweeney’s jet-tracking account on X (which was once known as Twitter) for similar reasons.
Nevertheless, Sweeney seems not to be discouraged thus having occasional encounters with the characters. The tracking project is still active on X and even though he continues to take time to adapt to the new changes in the rules of the platform. And instead of relying on social media alone, he’s moving his focus to his website, where he believes he will have more leeway over his content.
Sweeney is not exactly happy with how technology companies are handling those who want to participate in citizen journalism.
Who’s Calling the Shots?
Sweeney’s frustration comes down to one burning question: “Having my Facebook and Twitter accounts suspended, makes me wonder who is really behind the decision this time round?”
He says it might have been pressure from some public figure although at the current time, all this is guess work.
The Bigger Picture: Privacy vs. Public Interest
This whole situation stirs up a bigger debate: What must be done to maintain private lives while at the same time attending to public responsibilities? When it comes to the role, Sweeney stated that he wants to make people more aware of things and following private jets helps to ‘‘expose’’ those in power. While some like Musk and Swift opine that such tracking goes to the level of privacy invasion and endangers their security.
What’s Next for Jack Sweeney?
Sweeney is not giving up though, although there are would-be detriments to the bargain tool all the same. His love for tracking flights and the recent outrage against Big Tech’s treatment of free speech and journalism is what drives him. In fact, the latest ban has only made him work more on his website, because he can have full control over the work and does not depend on specific social media platforms.
As for him trying to unravel who might have been responsible for his suspension, well it is still not over yet, Thus, Sweeney you can bet is not letting go of this mystery anytime soon.
