The enduring mystery of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, is set to be dramatized in a new Hollywood thriller, “Killing Satoshi.” However, the timing is particularly interesting. With the announcement of the upcoming motion picture – coming out soon – the creator’s ghostly good luck is heading towards a place among the world’s ten richest people, creating two interesting stories, on and off the screen.

This film isn’t just a story about a digital currency; it’s a deep dive into power, privacy, and what happens when an individual’s creation threatens the global financial establishment.

A Bitcoin-Fueled Fortune Nears the Top 10

For years, the vast wealth attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto has been a primary driver of the ongoing quest to unmask them. Wallets believed to belong to the anonymous creator hold an estimated 1.1 million Bitcoin. This untouched treasure has grown exponentially, recently placing Satoshi at number 11 on the world’s richest list, with a staggering net worth of approximately $129 billion. This fortune puts them ahead of tech billionaire Michael Dell. The irony is palpable; for Satoshi to crack the Forbes top 10 and surpass financial titans like Warren Buffett, the very person who once called Bitcoin “rat poison,” the digital currency would only need to rise a few thousand dollars in value. This remarkable climb underscores the immense, untapped power held by the digital world’s most elusive figure.

The Plot: David vs. Goliath in the Digital Age

Directed by Hollywood veteran Doug Liman, known for his work on “The Bourne Identity,” “Killing Satoshi” is a conspiracy thriller that promises to be more than just a finance film. According to producer Ryan Kavanaugh, the project aims to do for Bitcoin what “The Social Network” did for Facebook—explain its true nature and impact on society. The film’s plot is described as a “David and Goliath story,” where a group of unlikely antiheroes takes on the most powerful institutions on the planet, from governments to Wall Street, all of whom have a vested interest in keeping Satoshi’s identity hidden forever. With filming set for London in October, the project, starring Casey Affleck and Pete Davidson, will explore how Bitcoin’s decentralized nature could upend the very concept of money and who controls it.

A Long History of Guessing Games

The new title of “Killing Satoshi” continues a long history of actual attempts to unmask the creator. In 2024, it was called “the year of trying to determine who Satoshi could be,” as it was the year of numerous theories, lawsuits, and people like Hal Finney, Nick Szabo, and even Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey being proposed as the identity of Satoshi. A recent HBO documentary even pointed a finger at developer Peter Todd, who vehemently denied the claim.

Legal Drama Closes One Door

In perhaps the most definitive development to date, a UK High Court judge ruled last year that Australian computer scientist Craig Wright is unequivocally not Satoshi Nakamoto. Wright, who considered himself a creator, had gone through his claims in various lawsuits which the court ultimately established had the support of “industrial scale forgery.” The decision not only seemed to close one of the most infamous doors in the Satoshi enigma but also demonstrated how far some would go to stake their claim to Bitcoin’s legacy.

What’s Next for Bitcoin’s Unmoved Fortune?

The biggest question still remains, will the creator ever touch their wealth? The 1.1 million Bitcoin stash has been dormant since 2011, which is either a remarkable indication that the Satoshi Nakamoto had a long time horizon or that they lost the key. Either way, it is clear that the Bitcoin stash is a constant feature in the conversation about global finance. With institutional investment and global acceptance rapidly increasing and pushing Bitcoin prices to new highs, analyst predictions for Bitcoin over the next decade run as high as $200,000, $1 million, and beyond. If this still hold true, Satoshi Nakamoto would not only be the richest person in world history, perhaps not only would they be the worlds first trillionaire, but who also created the financial revolution from the shadows.
