Old-fashioned banks stayed out of digital assets for a long time. Now they’re joining in. Charles Schwab, an American brokerage company with $12 trillion in client accounts, is about to launch its crypto-trading platform. This puts it head-to-head against the fast-moving fintechs like Robinhood and Coinbase.
Schwab Crypto: What Investors Need to Know
This newly specialized offering which is now branded “Schwab Crypto”, integrates decentralized finance into traditional portfolios. Retail clients will have the ability to buy/sell directly both the two largest digital assets (BTC & ETH) during this phased rollout. Rather than making users go through a separate exchange for buying/selling crypto, Schwab will provide access to the crypto purchase/sale functionality on their core dashboard and allow investors to see their digital currency as part of their stock/bond/retirement account transactions.
Bridging the Generational Wealth Gap
The choice to accept direct trading of a digital asset is indicative of a large demographic change occurring on Wall Street. Historically, Schwab has serviced an older, less traditional investor base. Recently, company managers reported that approximately one-third of all new retail accounts were being opened by customers aged 28 and under. By integrating Bitcoin and Ethereum, the brokerage is making a highly calculated play to attract and retain younger, tech-savvy demographics who have heavily favored commission-free platforms like Robinhood over the past decade.
Reclaiming the Missing One Percent
Beyond simply attracting new accounts, Schwab has a very specific financial target in mind: repatriating lost capital. During recent earnings calls, leadership acknowledged a common trend among their massive user base. While clients typically keep up to 98 percent of their total wealth comfortably housed at Schwab, they routinely transfer the remaining one or two percent over to digital-native firms specifically to trade cryptocurrency. Schwab wants that missing slice of the financial pie back under its own umbrella. To do so, they are offering an highly competitive trading fee of just 75 basis points per transaction.
A Measured and Regulated Approach
While there is great anticipation for crypto accounts being offered to their customers, Charles Schwab is taking a conservative approach toward this high-risk industry as they enter into crypto. Charles Schwab Premier Bank will provide all services related to this new product offering, and they have also worked with a regulated financial firm, Paxos, to manage custody and other back-end trading functions, allowing for peak security and regulatory compliance for their customers. This regulated partnership provides the brand familiarity and security guarantees that everyday investors demand before moving their digital assets.
A Turning Point for Traditional Finance
The rollout of Schwab Crypto represents a massive psychological milestone for the broader market. In 2019, the institution famously dismissed cryptocurrency as purely speculative. Today, they are actively building the infrastructure to support it. There are roughly 46 million people who are current customers of Schwab, and even a slight conversion rate from current users could result in a major influx of digital asset money into the market. As conventional financial institutions are increasingly adopting digital currency, the barrier between Wall St. and the blockchain is breaking apart.
