A High-Stakes Dinner with a Side of Disappointment
During May 2025, President Donald Trump held an elite gala dinner at his Virginia golf club, where he invited the leaders of the top 220 holders of his $TRUMP memecoin. The event, with the requirement of substantial investment in the cryptocurrency, promised guests a night to remember with Donald Trump. But for most, the experience proved disappointing.
Nicholas Pinto, a 25-year-old social media influencer, spent more than $360,000 on $TRUMP to get his name on the dinner guest list. Although the cost was eye-popping, Pinto said the dinner was below par, comparing the steak to that from a discount store. “Trash,” he texted during the banquet. “Walmart steak, man.”
The Allure of $TRUMP and the Promise of Access
Released shortly before Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, the $TRUMP memecoin surged into life, with a market capitalization of close to $8.8 billion before falling to about $2.8 billion. The leader of the top 220 owners was even offered a special dinner with the president to stimulate interest. Overall, investors plowed about $148 million of their money into the cryptocurrency for a chance to watch the event.
Though dinner was advertised as a time to meet directly with Trump, most guests said they had little contact. The president gave a short address but did not do much mingling with guests. Even Caitlin Sinclair, host of the evening and one of OANN’s anchors, said she didn’t receive a photo with Trump.
A Guest List Raising Eyebrows
The gala drew a collection of crypto influencers, industry players, and celebrities. Some of the prominent guests included Chinese crypto billionaire Justin Sun, who is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice, and former NBA player Lamar Odom, who hawked his own token, $ODOM, at the event.
Sun’s appearance was most controversial. He allegedly received a $100,000 Trump-marked tourbillon wristwatch at the dinner, his first trip to the U.S. since becoming the subject of legal controversy.
Ethical Concerns and Political Repercussions
The incident has raised serious ethical questions. The critics have maintained that the dinner is an example of “pay-to-play” where monetary donations provide entry to political leaders. Federal ethics investigation into the incident was formally asked for by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff, citing possible violations of federal bribery laws and constitutional provisions.
The White House itself denies any wrongdoing, arguing that Donald Trump’s actions are legal. A spokesperson said, “The President is working to secure GOOD deals for the American people, not for himself.”
The Aftermath: More Questions Than Answers
At the end of the evening, most guests were left wondering about their investment. Pinto, still hungry despite the disappointing dinner, went in search of something else to eat, noting that the only satisfying part of the meal was “the bread and the butter.”
The $TRUMP coin lost 16% of its value the next morning, further calling into question the viability and morality of combining political clout with cryptocurrency business.
