Uber is accelerating its commitment to India in a major way. The world’s most well-known ride-hailing company sees India as much more than just a growing customer for their transportation services; they see India as the center of their engineering and technology development on a global basis. Uber has made it known through these new development and engineering centers in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, that India holds a strategic place for their continued success within the company due to the technology talent developed here.

Expanding the Engineering Footprint

Uber’s latest infrastructure is substantial in scale. It will establish a new centre of operations in Bengaluru (at Prestige Lakeshore Drive, Bellandur) covering over 1.1 million square feet able to accommodate around 5,000 employees. In addition, their next centre in Hyderabad (at Meenakshi EcoPark) will have an area of over 900,000 square feet with seating for 4,600 employees. Together, Uber will have two mega-campuses housing approximately 9,600 workers by 2027, thereby greatly increasing their current workforce. The teams at these two locations will be responsible for developing complex systems that support the application that is used by millions of users around the globe.

A Strategic Partnership for Data

The company is also strengthening its backend infrastructure by building its very first data center in India as part of a partnerships with the Adani Group. Uber has recently confirmed that it will build the data center as part of this agreement. Set to become operational later this year, the facility will allow the company to seamlessly test, deploy, and scale advanced technologies locally. This dedicated infrastructure is a clear signal that the mobility firm is preparing to handle massive influxes of data while pioneering new artificial intelligence applications directly from the subcontinent.

Keeping Promises to the Workforce

The expansion announcements coincided with CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s intensive five-day visit to India. During his visit to India, Khosrowshahi held discussions with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to follow up on their previous meeting in late 2022 regarding long-term investment plans that align with the Indian government’s ambitious Viksit Bharat vision. He expressed his pride that the number of people who earn income on the platform was four times higher than at his last visit and has demonstrated the importance of the app to the Indian digital economy.

The “Create in India” Vision

This large investment continues a journey that started over 10 years ago. The company set up its first engineering centre in Asia located in Bengaluru, India in March 2016. As of today, they have expanded their domestic service offerings to include bike taxi services (also known as bicycle taxis), auto-rickshaw services, and integrated public transportation services into their business model. According to Amitabh Kant who was previously the head of NITI Aayog and met with Khosrowshahi after the meeting, this company has successfully shifted from providing services solely within Bangladesh to adopting the ‘Create in India’ concept and creating high-quality software developed by local engineers that will be sold globally.

Shifting Gears Toward the Future

Uber is making changes to its worldwide concentration as competition continues to form. Thus, the company has gone from just providing ride-hailing, to also investing heavily in enterprise mobility solutions and premium products.

In addition, Uber will continue to utilise generative AI tools to enhance internal productivity and coordinate company-wide hiring. To achieve this goal, the company has created new Indian campuses, which will serve as the primary driver of their technological evolution and keep Uber at the leading edge of global transport innovation into the future.
