The autonomous vehicle race is entering a new phase, and Uber is making one of its biggest bets yet.

The ride-hailing behemoth has reportedly invested over $500 million in the self-driving startup Nuro, according to sources quoted by Reuters. This indicates the growing confidence among digital corporations that robotaxis may soon become a common mode of transportation. Uber’s aspirations to establish itself at the core of the developing autonomous mobility ecosystem are evident in the investment, which consists of an initial financial round and additional milestone-based commitments.

Uber is no longer attempting to develop autonomous technology as businesses across the world compete to sell self-driving cars. Rather, it is becoming into a platform that links millions of riders with makers of autonomous vehicles.

The Three-Way Alliance Driving the Vision

At the heart of Uber’s strategy is a major partnership involving Nuro and electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid.

The trio plans to deploy 35,000 robotaxis using Lucid’s Gravity SUVs and future midsize electric vehicles, powered by Nuro’s autonomous driving technology and operated through Uber’s ride-hailing platform.

The scale of the planned rollout underscores the seriousness of the initiative. Rather than conducting limited pilot programs, the companies are working toward a large-scale commercial deployment that could dramatically expand the availability of autonomous ride-hailing services in the coming years.

For Uber, the collaboration offers a way to participate in the robotaxi revolution without shouldering the enormous costs and technical risks of developing self-driving systems from scratch.

The Hidden Details Behind the Investment

While Uber previously disclosed a $500 million investment in Lucid and participation in Nuro’s $203 million funding round that valued the startup at $6 billion, Reuters reports that Uber’s financial relationship with Nuro extends far beyond that initial announcement.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Uber later made an additional investment significantly larger than its first contribution. The company also agreed to release further funding as Nuro achieves specific technological and commercial milestones.

These combined commitments bring Uber’s total support for Nuro to nearly half a billion dollars.

Notably, some of those milestones have already been achieved on schedule, triggering the release of additional funds from Uber.

Key Milestones Still Ahead

The remaining funding is tied to several crucial objectives that will determine the success of the partnership.

One major target is conducting autonomous vehicle testing without a safety driver, an achievement expected later this year. Another milestone involves carrying passengers in fully driverless vehicles before the end of the year.

The companies are also focused on scaling operations significantly in 2027, moving from testing and pilot programs toward broader commercial deployment.

Successfully reaching these goals would place Nuro among a select group of companies capable of operating driverless passenger vehicles, joining an increasingly competitive field that includes Tesla, Waymo, and Zoox.

Nuro’s Transformation from Delivery Bots to Robotaxis

Founded with a focus on autonomous delivery vehicles, Nuro has undergone a significant transformation in recent years.

The startup initially became known for its small driverless delivery robots. However, in 2024, it pivoted toward licensing its autonomous driving software to automakers and mobility companies, a move designed to create a more scalable and sustainable business model.

The fresh funding from Uber provides Nuro with valuable financial resources as it works to prove that its technology can operate safely and efficiently at commercial scale.

The company is already testing autonomous vehicles with safety drivers and plans to launch services in the San Francisco Bay Area later this year.

A Crowded Race for Robotaxi Dominance

Uber’s growing partnership with Nuro comes amid renewed momentum across the autonomous vehicle industry.

Companies such as Tesla, Waymo, and Zoox are accelerating testing and deployment efforts, while Uber has established partnerships with several autonomous driving players, including Baidu, Rivian, and Wayve.

Rather than competing directly with these technology developers, Uber is positioning itself as the marketplace through which future autonomous transportation services reach consumers.

If robotaxis become a common sight on city streets over the next decade, Uber hopes to be the platform connecting riders to them—regardless of which company supplies the self-driving technology.

Its nearly $500 million commitment to Nuro suggests the company believes that future may arrive sooner than many expect.
