US-Iran War Raises Concerns Over India’s Chabahar Port Project and ₹15,000 Crore Bilateral Trade

The increasing tension between the United States and Iran has sparked serious concerns in New Delhi about the future of India’s strategic and economic ties with Iran. India’s involvement in the Chabahar Port project and bilateral commerce with Tehran, worth approximately ₹15,000 crore, are major sources of concern. As geopolitical tensions rise, politicians and trade experts warn that the battle would disrupt supply chains, delay infrastructure projects, and complicate India’s balancing act with the US and Iran.

India has already committed financial support to the Chabahar project, including a $120 million investment as part of its broader infrastructure engagement in Iran. The port is considered strategically important because it allows India to bypass Pakistan and access Afghanistan and Central Asia through a direct trade route. However, the conflict has created uncertainty around shipping routes, logistics, and financial transactions related to the project.

The immediate concern is whether the war will affect India’s ability to continue operating the port and carrying out related infrastructure work. The United States had earlier granted India a sanctions waiver for the Chabahar project because of its importance for regional connectivity and Afghanistan’s economic development. However, that waiver is scheduled to expire on April 26, 2026, leaving a narrow window for India to reassess its strategy if tensions escalate further.

Chabahar Port’s Strategic Role in India’s Regional Connectivity:

Chabahar Port has long been seen as a key component of India’s geopolitical strategy in the region. Located on Iran’s southeastern coast along the Gulf of Oman, it is the only Iranian deep-water port with direct access to the Indian Ocean. The project is meant to connect Indian trade routes to Afghanistan and Central Asia through road and rail links, reducing dependence on Pakistan for land access.

India, Iran, and Afghanistan signed agreements in 2016 to develop transport corridors through Chabahar, enabling Indian goods to move across the region more easily. The port also plays an important role in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which aims to connect India to Russia and Europe through a network of shipping, rail, and road routes.

Beyond logistics, Chabahar also has geopolitical significance. Analysts often view it as India’s response to China’s investment in Pakistan’s Gwadar Port under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. By strengthening its presence at Chabahar, India has sought to expand its influence in Central Asia and secure alternative trade pathways.

If the conflict escalates and leads to stricter sanctions or security concerns in the region, operations at the port could slow down. This would affect not only India’s trade ambitions but also the broader regional connectivity projects linked to the port.

₹15,000 Crore India–Iran Trade Faces Uncertainty:

The battle may also have an impact on India and Iran’s overall economic ties. Bilateral trade between the two countries today exceeds ₹15,000 crore, including goods like basmati rice, tea, sugar, and pharmaceuticals. A prolonged battle might disrupt shipping lines, banking systems, and commercial logistics between the two countries. Much of India’s trade with Iran is carried out via sea transit in the Persian Gulf region. Any expansion of hostilities or restrictions on shipping lanes may cause shipments to be delayed and freight costs to rise. According to recent reports, tensions in the Middle East have disrupted global commerce lines and shipping operations.

For exporters, uncertainty around payments and insurance could also create challenges. Sanctions and geopolitical tensions often make international banks reluctant to process transactions involving Iran, forcing companies to rely on alternative payment mechanisms. Agricultural products, which make up a significant portion of India’s exports to Iran, could be among the most affected sectors if trade routes remain unstable.

India’s Diplomatic Balancing Act:

The situation places India in a delicate diplomatic position. On one hand, the United States is a key strategic and economic partner. On the other hand, Iran remains an important partner for energy security, connectivity projects, and regional trade.

India has historically tried to maintain a balanced relationship with both countries. However, a prolonged US–Iran conflict could complicate that strategy. Decisions regarding sanctions waivers, trade channels, and port operations will likely depend on how the geopolitical situation evolves over the coming months.

For now, policymakers in New Delhi are closely watching developments in the Middle East. The outcome of the conflict could determine not only the future of the Chabahar project but also the stability of India’s trade ties with Iran and its broader regional connectivity ambitions.
