Volkswagen is preparing to electrify its most iconic performance hatchback—the Golf GTI—ushering in a new era for the legendary badge. Expected to debut by the end of the decade, the all-electric Golf GTI will be built on the VW Group’s all-new SSP (Scalable Systems Platform), which promises to be a gamechanger across the automotive group’s future line-up. According to VW CEO Thomas Schäfer, the project is progressing with high energy and ambition.
“At the end of the decade, we will bring an electric Golf [GTI], and that will be a monster car,” Schäfer declared. “It has to be exciting, it has to be authentic. If we bring a GTI, it has to be a GTI.”
Powertrain and Handling: A FWD Powerhouse
Despite the high-performance ID.3 GTX using a 322bhp rear-wheel-drive setup, Volkswagen is sticking to tradition for the GTI by keeping it front-wheel drive. Thanks to the precision and instant torque delivery of electric motors, the new e-GTI is expected to match—or even surpass—the performance leap over its current petrol-powered counterpart.
The GTI will not be alone in its electric transformation. VW is also planning an electric version of the Golf R, which will retain its all-wheel-drive performance ethos, creating further distinction between the two power-packed siblings.
A Line of Electric GTIs Begins
Before the electric Golf GTI hits the roads, VW plans to launch the ID.2 GTI, which has already been previewed in concept form. Schäfer revealed that the development teams were challenged to create a GTI lineup that future generations would be proud of.
“We’ll bring through a whole group of GTI [models], starting with the ID.2 GTI. The team has taken this on with great enthusiasm,” he added.
Having already taken prototypes of the electric GTI for a spin, Schäfer hinted at impressive early results. “We’ve driven a few prototypes, and it’s mind-blowing. It’s all there—the handling, the feel, even the sound. It can be done.”
Design and Development Underway
Design work for the electric Golf GTI is currently being finalized in the digital space, with physical prototypes expected soon. “We know what the vehicle looks like and can virtually sit inside it,” said Schäfer. “The dimensions and overall package are clear, though finer design iterations are ongoing.”
SSP Platform: The Backbone of VW’s EV Future
The SSP architecture will underpin a wide range of models across VW Group brands—from Skoda to Bentley and Lamborghini. It is designed to be modular and scalable, reducing development costs and increasing efficiency through shared components and systems.
“It’s really scalable,” Schäfer explained. “We’ll have multiple size categories but maintain core modules across them, allowing us to maximize purchasing power and flexibility.”
A Nod to the Past, a Leap into the Future
Despite the shift to electric power, Schäfer remains grounded in the GTI’s rich heritage. Asked to name his favorite GTI, he singled out the original Mk1 from 1976. “It was a gamechanger—an experiment that became a legend.”
With over 50 years of legacy behind it, the first electric Golf GTI is set to offer over 300bhp, dwarfing the 108bhp of its predecessor. But even as the powertrain evolves, VW is determined to ensure the GTI spirit remains intact—thrilling, agile, and unmistakably fun to drive.
