Volkswagen is getting ready to turn the page on its electric SUV lineup, and the ID.4 is first in line for a serious rethink. The upcoming facelift won’t just bring a visual refresh; it’s also expected to arrive with a brand-new name. According to reports, the updated model will be called the Volkswagen ID Tiguan, signaling a major shift in how VW wants its EVs to be perceived.
The confirmation reportedly came from IG Metall, the powerful German workers’ union, during a press conference at Volkswagen’s Emden plant. That facility, now fully dedicated to EV production, is one of two German factories currently building the ID.4.
A Familiar Name Makes a Comeback
The move to rename the ID.4 as the ID Tiguan isn’t just a branding tweak. It’s part of Volkswagen’s larger plan to move away from abstract “ID” naming and return to familiar, trusted badges.
Volkswagen’s sales and marketing boss Martin Sander previously hinted at this shift, saying future electric models would once again carry “proper names.” The strategy already kicked off with the ID. Polo and the ID Tiguan are set to follow the same path.
The idea is simple: make EVs feel less experimental and more like natural extensions of Volkswagen’s existing lineup.
Exterior: Sharper, Cleaner, More Confident
Although it’s technically a facelift, the updated ID Tiguan looks closer to a full redesign. Spy shots suggest nearly every exterior panel has been reworked, except for the roof.
Expect sharper body lines, more defined shoulders, squared-off wheel arches, and new pull-out door handles replacing the old pop-out units. The front and rear lighting signatures are also expected to mirror the latest petrol and diesel Tiguan, helping unify VW’s design language across powertrains.
In short, it looks less futuristic and more solid a deliberate move to appeal to mainstream buyers.
Interior Overhaul: Buttons Are Back
One of the biggest complaints about current ID models has been their touch-heavy interiors. Volkswagen seems to have listened.
The ID Tiguan is expected to ditch the much-criticized capacitive sliders in favor of physical buttons and proper controls for commonly used functions. This mirrors the approach taken in the upcoming ID Polo, which also introduces better materials and a more premium feel inside the cabin.
A new infotainment system with quicker response times and a cleaner interface is also expected to debut.
Updated Tech and Batteries
Underneath, the ID Tiguan will sit on a heavily updated version of Volkswagen’s MEB platform. Some variants are likely to use more affordable LFP batteries, while longer-range versions will continue with NMC lithium-ion packs.
This setup should help VW balance cost, performance, and range depending on the market.
Launch Timeline and Australia Prospects
The Volkswagen ID Tiguan is expected to make its official debut later this year. However, Australian buyers may need to wait until 2027 if the model is approved for local sale.
If it does arrive, it could become one of Volkswagen’s most important EVs yet, blending a familiar name, improved usability, and more mature design into a package aimed squarely at mainstream buyers.
And honestly, that’s probably exactly what the ID lineup needed.
