Volvo has officially pulled back the curtain on its latest electric vehicle, the 2026 ES90. While technically a hatchback, its sleek design maintains the elegance of a traditional sedan, blending innovation with Volvo’s signature styling. Set to be the Swedish automaker’s first all-electric sedan, the ES90 will co-exist alongside the gas-powered S90, offering customers a choice between conventional and electrified luxury.
Refined Scandinavian Design with a Modern Touch
The ES90 stays true to Volvo’s minimalist and sophisticated design language. Its front fascia is flat and smooth, flanked by the brand’s iconic “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights. The rear is equally striking, with elongated C-shaped taillights enhanced by additional LED accents extending into the rear window. A lidar sensor, which powers the car’s advanced driver-assistance systems, sits atop the vehicle. While it slightly disrupts the streamlined aesthetic, the panoramic glass roof helps maintain an elegant appearance.
With a wheelbase of 122.1 inches, the ES90 offers more cabin space than the S90 while being shorter overall at 196.9 inches in length. It stands taller than its gas-powered sibling at 60.9 inches, with a curb weight of up to 5787 pounds, making it significantly heavier than the plug-in hybrid S90.
Luxurious and Tech-Forward Interior
Inside, the ES90 continues Volvo’s trend of tech-heavy, premium interiors. A 14.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen dominates the dashboard, handling infotainment and vehicle controls via built-in Google software. A secondary 9.0-inch digital display is integrated into the steering column, accompanied by a head-up display for essential driving information.
Volvo emphasizes personalization, offering various upholstery materials and ambient lighting options. Every model comes equipped with a panoramic glass roof that filters out up to 99.9% of UV rays. For those seeking even more customization, an optional electrochromic glass roof allows passengers to adjust the transparency of the glass at the touch of a button.
Three Powertrains, Impressive Performance
The ES90 will be available in three powertrain configurations, catering to different performance needs:
- Single Motor Rear-Wheel Drive – The base model delivers 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds.
- Twin Motor All-Wheel Drive – This mid-tier option ups the output to 442 horsepower and 494 lb-ft, reducing the 0-60 mph time to 5.3 seconds.
- Twin Motor Performance – The range-topping variant boasts a staggering 670 horsepower and 635 lb-ft of torque, sprinting to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
With a drag coefficient of just 0.25, the ES90 is Volvo’s most aerodynamically efficient vehicle to date. Its sleek profile contributes to a competitive driving range, estimated at 343 miles for the smaller battery pack and 369 miles for the larger variant.
Advanced Charging Capabilities
Volvo’s first-ever 800-volt EV architecture ensures rapid charging speeds. When plugged into a 350-kW DC fast charger, the dual-motor ES90 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. A quick 10-minute charge can add up to 186 miles of range. The single-motor model, equipped with an 88.0-kWh battery, supports charging speeds of up to 300 kW.
Availability and Market Launch
The ES90 is now available for order in various European markets, with global rollouts continuing through late 2025 and 2026. While U.S. customers will have to wait a bit longer, the arrival of Volvo’s first fully electric sedan marks a significant milestone in the brand’s EV expansion.
With its blend of luxury, performance, and cutting-edge technology, the 2026 Volvo ES90 sets a new benchmark for electric sedans, even as it subtly redefines what a sedan truly is.
