Today’s weekly AI news highlights heated developments between Elon Musk and OpenAI, with new accusations surrounding monopolistic practices in generative AI. Musk has expanded his legal battle against OpenAI to include Microsoft, alleging that their exclusivity agreements are blocking competition. While OpenAI is pushing forward with new capabilities in ChatGPT, Musk, a former OpenAI co-founder, has criticized ChatGPT for being “woke.”

Meanwhile, OpenAI has also unveiled powerful updates to its ChatGPT, enhancing its search capabilities and integration with coding tools on macOS. These changes aim to challenge Google’s dominance in search and enhance AI’s role in software development.

  • OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Windows App with Companion Window Feature

According to the latest weekly AI news, OpenAI has rolled out a dedicated ChatGPT app for Windows 10 and 11 users. Previously limited to Plus subscribers, the app now supports all users, allowing a “companion window” for seamless multitasking. Users can quickly access ChatGPT with  the Alt + space hotkey.

Notable features include the ability to take screenshots and upload images. Meanwhile, macOS users receive updates allowing ChatGPT to read code from third-party apps, enhancing integration with IDEs. This functionality is currently limited to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu access planned soon.

  • ChatGPT Now Integrates with macOS Coding Apps for Enhanced Developer Support

OpenAI has introduced a new feature, “Work with Apps,” in its ChatGPT desktop app for macOS. This upgrade allows the AI to read code from select coding tools like VS Code, Xcode, and Terminal. By utilizing macOS’s accessibility API, ChatGPT can pull code directly from these apps, reducing the need for manual copy-pasting.

However, it currently cannot write code directly into apps. The feature is available for Plus and Teams users, with plans to expand access soon. OpenAI aims to develop more integrations, starting with coding apps before expanding to text-based writing tools.

  • OpenAI Adds Search Engine Capabilities to ChatGPT, Challenging Google

OpenAI has upgraded ChatGPT by integrating search engine capabilities, allowing users to access real-time information with linked sources. This enhancement offers timely answers, covering weather, stocks, and news. Unlike traditional search engines, ChatGPT provides cleaner, ad-free results. The search feature is currently available for paid users but will soon expand to free users.

Notably, ChatGPT partners with media like Le Monde and Financial Times for content. OpenAI plans to refine its system based on feedback. CEO Sam Altman praised the new feature, calling it a significant improvement since ChatGPT’s 2022 launch.

  • Sam Altman Counters Elon Musk’s Claims of ChatGPT Bias

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed Elon Musk’s criticism of ChatGPT’s alleged bias, comparing responses between ChatGPT and Musk’s Grok on X. Without naming Musk directly, Altman questioned which AI truly aligns with “left-wing propaganda.” Altman emphasized ChatGPT’s strong performance in unbiased evaluations.

Musk also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging they stifle competition. The amended complaint accuses OpenAI of leveraging Microsoft’s resources to dominate the AI market while blocking funding for rivals like Musk’s xAI.

  • Elon Musk Expands Lawsuit Against OpenAI, Now Targets Microsoft

Elon Musk intensified his legal battle against OpenAI by expanding his lawsuit to include Microsoft. Filed in an Oakland federal court, the revised complaint accuses the tech giants of monopolizing the generative AI market through exclusive agreements, allegedly breaching antitrust laws. Musk’s legal team claims Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI operates like a merger without regulatory oversight. Elon Musk’s recent lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft has become a highlight in the weekly AI news, focusing on alleged market monopolization.

Conclusion

Today’s weekly AI news portrays the rapid progress and challenges facing the AI industry. OpenAI continues to enhance its capabilities with new features in ChatGPT, positioning itself as a major player in the generative AI space. At the same time, legal disputes, like Elon Musk’s ongoing lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, highlight concerns over market dominance and competition.

As the industry evolves, it will be critical to monitor how the aforementioned developments shape the future of AI technology.
