Meta’s popular messaging service WhatsApp is introducing further AI integration with two new features now under test in beta versions for Android users. The features include a convenient home screen widget to get quick access to Meta AI and the ability to design group icons with AI suggestions.
Quick Access Widget Enhances Meta AI Accessibility
The latest Android 2.25.6.14 version of WhatsApp beta features a new widget that allows individuals to access Meta’s AI chatbot directly from the home screen, without even opening the app in the first place. The simplicity of the process is Meta’s continued effort to make its AI tools available for free on its entire app suite.
When placed on the home screen, the widget presents an “Ask Meta AI” button that brings up an instant chat with the AI assistant immediately. A few of the beta testers have noted that they found an expanded version of the widget with specific Camera and Voice buttons that enable users to interact with Meta AI with images or voice commands.
This new shortcut bypasses the need to first open WhatsApp and then press the Meta AI floating action button, cutting down considerably on friction for users who are constantly engaging with the chatbot.
AI-Generated Group Icons Add Creative Personalization
In a separate update (WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.6.10), some testers now have access to an AI-powered group icon generation feature. When editing a group’s profile picture, a new “Create AI Image” option appears alongside traditional options like taking a photo or choosing from the gallery.
Selecting this option opens a Meta AI prompt screen where users can describe their desired image. The AI then generates multiple options that users can swipe through before selecting one as the group icon. This feature adds a new layer of personalization for WhatsApp groups without requiring users to have design skills or search for appropriate images.

The addition continues Meta’s pattern of incorporating generative AI features across its platforms, similar to the AI image generation capabilities already available in Instagram and Facebook.
These updates reflect Meta’s ongoing commitment to embedding AI functionality throughout its messaging platform. The company has been gradually expanding Meta AI’s capabilities within WhatsApp since its introduction, positioning it as a helpful assistant for everything from answering questions to generating images.
By making AI features more prominent and accessible, WhatsApp appears to be competing with standalone AI chatbots while leveraging its massive user base of over two billion people worldwide. The integration strategy makes AI capabilities available to users who might not otherwise download a dedicated AI application.
Availability and Rollout Timeline
These capabilities are reserved only for a subset of users of WhatsApp’s Android beta testing group. Like with most beta capabilities, these are probably being tried out for stability and user acceptance before a more extensive rollout.
Even though there has not been a public schedule announced, successful beta features tend to roll out to every platform for both Android and iOS devices in a matter of months. Anybody who wants to test features like these ahead of everybody else can enroll in WhatsApp’s beta program via the Google Play Store, although beta spots tend to be limited in quantity.
What’s Next for WhatsApp
The Meta AI updates follow on from the fact that WhatsApp is reported to be developing several new features including UPI Lite support for quick payments in India, Instagram profile linking features, and potential integration with Google Messages for video calls.
As Meta continues to solidify its position as a consumer AI application leader, WhatsApp users have much to look forward to in future updates in the form of AI-driven features, blurring the line between traditional messaging and AI-driven support.
In the meantime, most users will need to wait until these beta features are no longer in test mode before they can appreciate the new AI features on their phones. Given Meta’s rapid pace of AI development over the past year, that wait may not be as long.
