Just try to picture the rocket having to stop for gas and then be able to travel the long distance of space and back from the Moon without any problems. Which might sound like science fiction, isn’t it? Well, for Starpath Robotics, a scrappy startup founded by former SpaceX engineers, this is exactly the future they’re aiming for. After receiving a $12 million seed funding only recently, this team aims to realize this rather wild concept.
A dream that starts with the need of a group of people for something that they can only dream of.
Starpath Robotics was born out of a simple but mind-blowing idea: What if one could have reusable lunar spacecraft? This start-up company was established in 2022 by a team of innovative engineers who have set their sights on the Moon. They are determined to drill the lunar craters for the water ice which, in turn, may be converted to fuels for rockets. It’s something as simple as discovering a service station in the middle of the solar system.
The Mastermind Behind it all
This is owned by Saurav Shroff, its CEO and co-founder; Shroff shared the conversion story with Business Insider. “We understood no one was developing technology to refuel spacecraft once they get to the Moon or Mars and that made us know there was a gap that needed to be filled,” he added. In my view, Shroff and his team were at the right place at the right time, when they discovered a hole in the space pipe, and made a business out of it before people realized it was a loss-making operation.
How They Would Like to Achieve It
Well, how exactly will Starpath Robotics accomplish this incredible feat of using Moon rocks to create rocket fuel? The solution to this lies in the Sun power which has been disregarded for quite some time. The idea proposed by the company is to deploy a very large solar farm at the lunar surface. The specific solar farm will be used to produce power required for the operation of the mining rovers and a technologically advanced fuel production facility.
Constructing the Future, The Structure at a Time
Starpath Robotics is already on the way to that with 20 brilliant minds working round the clock in their facilities based in California. The company intends to have its revolutionary hardware to be set on a spaceship going to the Moon by the mid of 2026.
Further fundraising activity, including the latest round raising $12 million this year with support from high-profile venture funds 8VC and Fusion Fund, with participation from Day One Ventures, Balerion Space, and several others, speaks for itself. This funding will enable the startup to grow and establish new facilities especially in Hawthorne, California, and recruit more talent.
Why This Matters
Starpath isn’t just about refueling rockets; it’s about setting the stage for entirely new industries that may grow from their need for space. In other words – picture mining on the Moon, tourism to space, creating stuff in space. ”The opportunities are limitless as are possibilities of exploration – and Starpath Robotics is poised for it.
