Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will reach the end of its mainstream support on October 14, 2025, after nearly a decade of service. As the tech giant shifts its focus to Windows 11 and its AI-powered features, Windows 10 users are encouraged to plan their transition.

But it’s not just the operating system facing retirement. OneNote for Windows 10 will also lose support on the same date, bringing changes for users who rely on the app for note-taking and organization.

OneNote for Windows 10: Time to Move On

In a recent statement, Microsoft confirmed that OneNote for Windows 10 will no longer receive feature updates or security patches past its end-of-support date. The company strongly advises users to migrate to the desktop version of OneNote that comes with Microsoft 365.

This newer version offers enhanced functionality, including improved security, frequent updates, and integration with Copilot AI. Features like Microsoft Information Protection sensitivity labeling will also provide more robust data protection.

Encouragement to Transition Early

To ensure a smooth transition, Microsoft urges individuals and organizations to make the switch sooner rather than later. They recommend uninstalling the legacy version to prevent any confusion or disruption. Detailed migration guidance is available to assist with the process.

Early Warnings and Service Restrictions

While the final cutoff is in October 2025, Microsoft will implement changes starting earlier to encourage users to switch. Beginning in June 2025, users may experience slower synchronization, especially those using OneNote across multiple devices or collaborating in real time.

By July 2025, Microsoft will introduce in-app notification banners reminding users of the impending end-of-support. While these banners are designed to grab attention, they may also interfere with workflows.

Why Upgrade to OneNote on Windows?

Microsoft highlights several benefits of transitioning to the newer version of OneNote, including:

  • Stronger Security: Enhanced protection through regular security updates.
  • AI Integration: Copilot AI for smarter productivity.
  • Seamless Collaboration: Faster syncing and improved real-time collaboration.
  • Advanced Features: Access to sensitive data labeling and other enterprise-grade tools.

Preparing for the Shift

To avoid disruptions, users are encouraged to initiate their migration plans early. Microsoft has published a step-by-step migration guide to simplify the process. IT administrators can also access additional resources to assist their teams.

With these proactive steps, individuals and businesses can enjoy a seamless transition to OneNote on Windows (M365) and continue benefiting from its latest features and security improvements. Microsoft remains committed to providing support throughout the migration process, ensuring users experience minimal disruption.
