You Can Now Order a Cybertruck Without a Reservation

For the first time since its launch, Tesla’s Cybertruck is available for purchase without the need for a reservation. This marks a significant shift from the days when eager buyers had to place a $250 deposit and wait for months or even years to get their hands on Tesla’s electric pickup truck. As Tesla works through its pre-order waitlist, the Cybertruck is finally available for immediate purchase, though it comes with some caveats.

Cybertruck Waitlist Cleared

According to Electrek, Tesla has cleared its massive Cybertruck waitlist, which at one point was rumored to include as many as 2 million reservations, based on community-sourced data. While the exact number of pre-orders may never be confirmed by Tesla, the fact remains that the company has worked through the bulk of its backlog. This means that for the first time since its unveiling, prospective buyers can go directly to Tesla’s “Design your Cybertruck” page and place an order for delivery as soon as November, with no mention of a reservation system in place.

However, just because you can now order a Cybertruck without a waitlist doesn’t mean they will suddenly flood the streets. Despite the initial high demand, Tesla has only delivered around 28,250 Cybertrucks since they started production in November 2023, according to quarterly EV sales data from Cox Automotive. This makes the Cybertruck the third best-selling electric vehicle in the U.S., trailing behind the more established Tesla Model Y and Model 3.

Pricing Challenges: From $40,000 to Over $70,000

One major factor that may have slowed the Cybertruck’s conversion of pre-orders into sales is its pricing. Back in 2019, when Tesla CEO Elon Musk first unveiled the Cybertruck, he teased an entry price of around $40,000, making it an attractive option for buyers looking for a budget-friendly electric pickup. However, by the time the truck was finally ready for production, its base price had risen significantly. The current starting price listed on Tesla’s website is $74,490, almost double the initial estimate.

This dramatic price increase may have dissuaded some early adopters from following through with their reservations. Electrek notes that while Tesla had millions of pre-orders, only about 3% have translated into actual sales so far. Many potential buyers may feel disappointed by the steep cost jump, and others could be turned off by Musk’s polarizing public persona, which has led some to distance themselves from the brand.

Another factor that could be dampening enthusiasm for the Cybertruck is the number of technical issues that have plagued the vehicle since its launch. In 2024 alone, the Cybertruck has already been subject to five recalls. These recalls have addressed problems with critical features such as the rearview camera, warning lights, accelerator pedal, front windshield wiper, and the trim of the truck’s bed. These issues have raised concerns about the quality control surrounding the Cybertruck’s production.

Additionally, Tesla’s much-touted Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature, which the Cybertruck received in an update last month, has also come under scrutiny. Regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are currently investigating Tesla’s Autopilot and FSD systems due to a series of accidents and fires linked to the technology. So far, 20 incidents involving Tesla’s self-driving features have been reported, raising questions about the safety of this high-profile technology.

These well-publicized issues could be contributing to some buyers’ hesitation. While the Cybertruck’s unique design and performance appeal to many, the recurring technical problems have given others pause. Tesla’s approach to quality control and its handling of recalls will likely play a significant role in shaping the Cybertruck’s future market success.

Despite these challenges, the Cybertruck remains an intriguing option in the EV market. Its bold design, impressive range, and powerful performance make it stand out from traditional pickup trucks. Tesla’s reputation as a leader in electric vehicles also provides some reassurance to buyers, especially those loyal to the brand.

For those who are not deterred by the price hike or the technical hiccups, the opportunity to purchase a Cybertruck without delay may be an exciting prospect. However, Tesla’s ability to address ongoing concerns about safety, pricing, and reliability will be crucial in determining whether the Cybertruck can maintain its appeal in the long run.

Tesla’s decision to clear the Cybertruck waitlist and make the vehicle available for immediate purchase is a significant milestone for the company. However, this comes amidst a backdrop of challenges, including price increases and multiple recalls. While the Cybertruck’s futuristic design and Tesla’s brand power have generated significant interest, potential buyers may still be wary due to the unresolved technical issues and safety concerns. Nevertheless, for those eager to own one of Tesla’s most unique vehicles, now is the first time to do so without a long wait. Whether the Cybertruck can overcome these obstacles and live up to its hype remains to be seen.
