In an automotive world rapidly moving toward electrification, automation, and digital everything, BMW has done something gloriously old-school. It has built a hardcore, rear-wheel-drive M3 with a proper six-speed manual transmission and enthusiasts are already losing their minds over it.

Meet the 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter, a machine that feels less like a regular production car and more like a future collector’s item the moment it rolls out of the showroom.

The name “Handschalter,” German for “manual gearbox,” first appeared on a special version of the BMW Z4. Now, BMW has revived the badge for what could become one of the most desirable M cars in recent memory.

Built for Drivers, Not Drag Races

Unlike the standard M3 CS, which uses all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, the new Handschalter takes a purer approach. Power goes exclusively to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, delivering a far more connected driving experience.

Under the hood sits BMW’s twin-turbocharged inline-six engine producing 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. That is slightly down on power compared to the automatic M3 CS, but this car was never designed to win spec-sheet battles.

BMW says the M3 CS Handschalter can sprint from 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 mph. While those numbers are impressive, they only tell half the story.

What this car is really about is engagement — the kind that modern performance cars are increasingly losing.

Sharper Suspension, Lighter Body

BMW has extensively reworked the chassis to suit the manual setup. The car borrows dampers from the M4 CS and receives revised springs, unique axle tuning, and updated rear suspension geometry for improved balance and responsiveness.

The lightweight treatment also plays a major role. Carbon fiber has been used across the hood, roof, front and rear sections, interior trim, and even the seat frames. BMW has also fitted a titanium exhaust system to reduce weight further and sharpen the soundtrack.

Overall, the Handschalter weighs 42 pounds less than the standard manual M3. Buyers can cut another 32 pounds by opting for carbon-ceramic brakes.

Classic BMW Drama With Modern Aggression

Visually, the M3 CS Handschalter carries over the aggressive styling of the standard CS model. Yellow-tinted daytime running lights, enlarged aero components, forged alloy wheels, and muscular bodywork give it undeniable road presence.

Buyers can choose from Isle of Man Green or Black Sapphire metallic as standard colors, while Imola Red and Techno Violet are optional premium paints. The forged wheels are available in either black or Gold Bronze finishes, wrapped in staggered high-performance rubber.

A Future Collector’s Dream?

The 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter starts at $108,450. That places it well above the standard manual M3 but slightly below the original M3 CS launched in 2023.

Still, the price may not stay there for long.

Limited-production BMW M cars with manual gearboxes have historically become highly sought-after collector vehicles. With manual performance sedans becoming increasingly rare, the M3 CS Handschalter arrives at exactly the right time.

It is fast, analog, emotional, and unapologetically built for people who still love driving.

And in today’s market, that alone makes it special.
