Toyota has officially confirmed what many industry watchers suspected: the Highlander is going electric. After weeks of teasers, the automaker revealed that its mysterious new three-row SUV is not a replacement, but a fully electric evolution of the familiar Highlander nameplate.
In a short teaser video released on Instagram, Toyota unveiled the all-new 2027 Highlander, positioning it as a battery-electric SUV with three rows of seating and all-wheel drive. A brief accompanying statement described the vehicle as featuring “sleek, modern lines, an electric powertrain, and a spacious three-row cabin with comfort for the whole crew.”
Not “Highlander EV,” Just Highlander
One of the more interesting choices Toyota has made is what it did not name the vehicle. Rather than branding it as the “Highlander EV,” the company is sticking with the standard Highlander name. That decision suggests Toyota may be signaling continuity rather than disruption, though it raises questions about the future of gasoline and hybrid Highlander variants.
So far, Toyota has not clarified whether combustion or hybrid versions will continue alongside the electric model, or if the Highlander badge will gradually transition to electric-only status.
A Strategic Shift for Toyota
This announcement marks a notable change in Toyota’s long-standing electrification strategy. While many competitors have pushed aggressively into full battery-electric vehicles, Toyota has historically prioritized hybrids and plug-in hybrids, often expressing skepticism about rapid, all-in EV adoption.
The arrival of the 2027 Highlander as a dedicated BEV signals a recalibration. For Toyota, this is not just another electric model; it’s one of its most mainstream, family-oriented SUVs leaping into full electrification.
Design Takes a Sharper Turn
Although the teaser video is brief, it reveals some key design cues. The Highlander badge is shown above an all-wheel-drive emblem and Toyota’s BEV logo, confirming its electric credentials. A close-up shot hints at a more squared-off, upright design language, aligning it visually with newer Toyota models like the Land Cruiser and 4Runner.
Earlier teasers showed a blocky silhouette with wrap-around taillights, while a second preview confirmed the three-row layout and offered a glimpse of a more modern, tech-forward interior.
Teasers Build Toward Full Reveal
This is the third teaser Toyota has released in as many weeks, each one gradually lifting the curtain. The first revealed little more than the vehicle’s shape. The second established its size and seating configuration. This latest video finally confirms what powers it.
Toyota has scheduled the full global reveal of the 2027 Highlander for 9:30 p.m. ET on February 10, where full specifications, range details, and positioning within Toyota’s broader EV lineup are expected to be disclosed.
For now, one thing is clear: the Highlander name is entering a new electric era.
