Speechify makes a convincing case for listening to books and articles, but its subscription may cost more than you want to spend on everyday reading. A useful alternative should preserve what matters: an enjoyable voice, access to the material you already read, and a straightforward way to press play. Saving money should not mean making reading harder.

CastReader is worth trying first. Its Pro plan costs $35.99 a year, compared with Speechify Premium’s published annual price of $139. Natural voices, synchronized highlighting, and Kindle support cover much of what a regular listener needs. For someone buying a reading tool rather than a broader suite of voice features, that is an appealing combination.

The other options serve different needs. NaturalReader emphasizes documents, ElevenReader offers a range of reading voices, Readwise Reader combines listening with saved articles and notes, and Microsoft Edge handles basic web reading for free. Start with the material you read most, then compare the cost of a suitable plan.

Tool and plan Monthly billing Annual total Main use
CastReader Pro $4.99 $35.99 Everyday listening, Kindle and highlighting
NaturalReader Lite $13.90 $79 PDFs, documents and scanned material
ElevenReader Ultra $11 $99 Books, articles and uploaded files
Readwise, including Reader $12.99 $119.88 Listening, saved reading and notes
Microsoft Edge Read Aloud Free Free Basic web reading

Prices are official website prices in US dollars, checked on October 9, 2026. Annual plans are paid upfront; regional and app-store prices may differ. Voice access, allowances, and additional features vary by plan. NaturalReader Lite is its entry-level paid personal plan, not its full range of subscriptions.

CastReader for affordable everyday listening and Kindle

CastReader keeps the process focused on reading. Open supported material, choose a voice and start playback, without first producing an audio file. Natural-sounding voices and adjustable speed help make longer passages comfortable to follow. Synchronized highlighting also makes it easy to glance back at a sentence without searching the whole page for your place.

Voice cloning adds a more personal option alongside the standard voices. Read one sentence when prompted to create a version of your own voice, then use it to read other text. You do not have to record the book yourself. Instead of picking another narrator from a list, you can hear a story in a familiar voice that sounds like you.

Kindle support is another practical reason to consider it. On a Mac or Windows computer, open a supported Kindle Cloud Reader book in Chrome or Edge and use the CastReader extension. The book stays visible while the voice reads and the highlighting moves through the text. This is a browser-based reading experience, not a separate desktop reading app.

On phones and tablets, you can open Kindle books in the CastReader app and keep listening in the background or with the screen locked. It also supports reading books from Kobo, Google Play Books, and O’Reilly. Choose the appropriate version from CastReader’s mobile apps and browser extensions according to the device you use most.

That is especially useful when you already have a digital bookshelf: you can listen to material you are reading, rather than find a new source of content. The free tier includes 20 minutes of regular reading per day for trying the voices and highlighting. Read & Explain offers a spoken explanation of the content as an additional option, separate from word-for-word reading.

NaturalReader for PDFs and scanned documents

NaturalReader is an established option for document listening. Its personal product accepts files including PDF, Word, and EPUB, with OCR available through paid plans to recognize text in images and scanned material. If your reading consists mainly of course handouts, work documents, and scanned pages, those document features deserve attention.

Lite costs $79 a year, below Speechify Premium but above CastReader Pro. Voice access differs between tiers, so check the relevant subscription if you want Plus or Pro voices. The reason to choose it is a genuine need for its document handling or voice options, rather than simply the length of the supported-format list.

ElevenReader for voice choice and longer reading

ElevenReader focuses on listening to books, articles and files. It accepts material such as PDFs, EPUBs and documents, as well as article links. Its voice selection is a useful part of the comparison, particularly for fiction, biographies and long features. A voice you want to hear for several chapters matters more than a striking one-sentence demonstration.

Ultra is listed at $11 a month or $99 a year, with a listening allowance also available on the free plan. This is ElevenReader, the reading product, rather than ElevenLabs’ commercial voice-production service. Try a familiar passage in a voice you like, then weigh that experience against how often you expect to listen.

Readwise Reader for saved articles and notes

Readwise Reader does more than read text aloud. It brings articles, newsletters, PDFs and EPUBs into a reading library, with highlighting and notes alongside text-to-speech. If you save substantial amounts of reading or return to sources for writing and work, organizing and revisiting material may be just as important as hearing it.

The Readwise subscription that includes Reader costs $12.99 a month or $119.88 a year. Those library features may not justify the price if all you want is to hear a book. If saving, annotating, and reviewing articles are already daily habits, however, keeping those activities together can be more convenient than adding a separate read-aloud tool.

Microsoft Edge for free web listening

For occasional news or web articles, try Edge’s built-in Read Aloud feature. It offers voice and speed controls on supported pages without a separate subscription for basic listening. If Edge is already your browser, there is little setup involved: open an article you would normally read and see whether the experience meets your needs.

Listening to the occasional report on a computer is different from using one product for books, files and mobile reading. Edge is a sensible starting point for the former. If you also want Kindle listening on a phone or tablet, or a personal cloned voice, dedicated reading products become more relevant.

Choosing an alternative worth keeping

For free web listening, start with Edge. For document processing, look more closely at NaturalReader. If a reading library and notes matter, consider Readwise Reader, while ElevenReader belongs on a voice-listening shortlist. You do not need to use every feature of a product for it to be a good choice.

CastReader is a strong starting point for an affordable Speechify alternative that handles web pages, documents, and Kindle. Natural voices, speed control, and highlighting are useful immediately, with cloning adding a personal touch. After trying familiar material, compare CastReader Pro’s current subscription plans. Monthly billing allows a shorter commitment; annual billing lowers the cost of a regular reading habit.
