The prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology have long been synonymous with the challenging Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, which thousands of students take each year to secure a seat. But breaking away from the traditional route, IIT-Kanpur has made headlines by admitting five students into its Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programmes without JEE or any conventional examinations. This significant action suggests wider reforms at leading universities and represents a bold transformation in India’s engineering admissions environment.
The program at IIT Kanpur is intended for students who excel in international science Olympiads and training camps and show great talent and commitment. These Olympiads are internationally renowned contests, and they include the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), International Physics Olympiad (IPO), International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), International Biology Olympiad (IBO), and International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). This year, five students—two from West Bengal and one each from Delhi, Maharashtra, and Karnataka—have taken advantage of their Olympiad accomplishments. Performance at the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) and International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC) determined their entries.
Departments, Selection and Eligibility Criteria:
These special admission opportunities are not available in every department. At IIT-Kanpur, seats are limited to select branches including Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, and Mathematics & Statistics. The process is stringent, designed to match the scientific rigor of traditional admissions but with a different focus.
Candidates must fulfill the basic eligibility requirements aligning with JEE Advanced: they must complete Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in their Class 12 exams. In addition, participation and performance in designated Olympiad training camps are required. Importantly, candidates are not directly admitted solely based on Olympiad rankings instead, the selection proceeds with departmental shortlisting, followed by a mandatory written test and, in some cases, an interview. This process ensures that students possess both the depth of Olympiad experience and the aptitude for undergraduate engineering study.
Other IITs Embrace Alternative Excellence Admission Routes:
It’s not just IIT Kanpur that acknowledges a variety of greatness. A number of other IITs have launched comparable channels. IIT-Madras has introduced the Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) and Science Olympiad Excellence Admission (SCOPE) programs for its undergraduate programs, which are intended for students who have excelled in sports and science Olympiads. Recently, IIT Gandhinagar also revealed their Olympiad-based admissions process. At IIT Bombay, the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) has made the Bachelor of Science (BS) Mathematics program available to people who were previously excluded from the JEE process. This is just another example of how academic achievements can open doors.
These new models of entry are not about relaxing standards. They are designed to acknowledge students whose talents shine in areas that may not always translate to high scores in nationwide entrance tests.
