08 July 2017, India:

India has been ranked 23rd out of 193 nations in the second Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) that measures the commitment of nations across the world to cyber security.

ITU, the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technology, has published the Global Cybersecurity Index 2017, which measures the commitment of ITU’s 193 Member States to cyber security and is the second in this index series.

“At ITU, we are committed to making the Internet more secure, safer and trustworthy, for the benefit of all,” said Houlin Zhao, ITU Secretary General. “While the impact generated by cyber-attacks, such as those carried out as recently as 27 June 2017, may not be eliminated completely, prevention and mitigation measures to reduce the risks posed by cyber-related threats can and should always be put in place. The GCI reaffirms ITU’s commitment to build confidence and security in the use of ICTs.”

India is ranked 23rd on the index with a score of 0.683 and has been listed in the “maturing” category, which refers to 77 countries that have developed complex commitments to cyber security and engage in cybersecurity programmes and initiatives.

Listed below are top 10 countries that have topped GCI

  1. Singapore
  2. United States
  3. Malaysia
  4. Oman
  5. Estonia
  6. Mauritius
  7.  Australia
  8. Georgia
  9. France
  10. Canada

Russia is ranked 11th.

Last month, a cyber attack crippled tens of thousands of machines around the world. It is unclear who was behind the attack. “While the impact generated by cyber attacks, such as those carried out as recently as 27 June 2017, may not be eliminated completely, prevention and mitigation measures to reduce the risks posed by cyber-related threats can and should always be put in place,” said ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao.

The threat is particularly worrying as in 2016, according to ITU, nearly one percent of all emails sent were essentially malicious attacks, the highest rate in recent years.  (Image- Security Intelligence)
