Galaxy AI Features May be Behind The Paywall From 2025, Samsung Hints
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

Samsung has hinted that Galaxy AI features may be behind the paywall from 2025, potentially impacting free access to these tools. Although the company has not officially confirmed this, recent statements and hints suggest a shift towards monetization.

In a recent press release for the launch of the Galaxy S24 FE, Samsung included a note stating, “Galaxy AI features will be provided for free until the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices.” This suggests that, after this period, users may have to pay for access to at least some of these features. Although Samsung has not specified which features might be affected, the footnote has fueled speculation.

Samsung also mentioned that certain AI features provided by third parties might operate under different terms. For example, some Galaxy AI tools are developed in partnership with companies like Google, such as the “Circle to Search” feature. If a paywall is introduced, some third-party AI features might still be accessible for free.

Uncertainty Over Pricing and Features

There is speculation that Galaxy AI features may be behind the paywall from 2025 with some premium tools requiring subscriptions. Despite multiple hints, Samsung has not yet provided details about which Galaxy AI features will require payment or how much users can expect to pay. In a previous interview, Hon Pak, the head of Samsung Health, hinted at the possibility of a subscription service for the Samsung Health app but stopped short of offering concrete plans. Pak emphasized that any paid AI features would need to provide substantial value to users.

Samsung’s decision to introduce paid AI features could be influenced by several factors. Firstly, Samsung has been exploring ways to generate more consistent revenue through subscription services. Secondly, Since many Galaxy AI features rely on Google’s AI technology, Samsung may follow suit if Google decides to charge for these tools.

Which AI Features Could Become Paid?

The more advanced Galaxy AI features, like “Sketch to Image” and AI wallpaper generators, are resource-intensive and may require a subscription. Real-time translation, another popular Galaxy AI tool, could also be a candidate for monetization. Furthermore, Samsung might launch a screen and context-aware version of its Bixby assistant, potentially limiting access to premium users only.

Although Samsung has not yet revealed pricing details, it is expected that the cost of accessing Galaxy AI features will be competitive. OpenAI has already established a successful subscription model for its AI tools. Similar services, such as Google’s AI One, start at $20, while OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus costs the same. Samsung could offer comparable or even lower prices to attract users.

Concerns have grown among consumers that Galaxy AI features may be behind the paywall from 2025, limiting their ability to use AI tools without extra fees. Samsung already offers paid services, such as Secure Wi-Fi, which provides secure browsing for a fee. This shows the company’s willingness to adopt a subscription-based model. As a result, it is increasingly likely that some Galaxy AI features will require payment in the future.

The Disadvantages

One of the key concerns with this shift is accessibility. Samsung’s Galaxy AI features, such as real-time translation, AI-generated wallpapers, and “Sketch to Image,” are currently included with the purchase of certain devices. Introducing a paywall for these features may limit access to only those willing or able to pay for a subscription. This could create a divide between users who can afford premium services and those who cannot, thus potentially alienating a significant portion of the customer base.

Moreover, if Samsung decides to charge for AI tools that users have grown accustomed to accessing for free, there may be pushback. Consumers often expect features included in their devices to remain free, especially when no initial indication was given that they would later require payment. A sudden policy change could lead to dissatisfaction.
