Saylor Hints at Another Bitcoin Buy Amidst Corporate Treasury Turbulence

In a display of loyalty to the digital asset, Michael Saylor, the executive chairman of Strategy (previously MicroStrategy), has suggested a large Bitcoin acquisition once again. This speculation comes at a particularly tumultuous time for the corporate crypto treasury sector, where a sharp decline in Net Asset Values (NAV) has wiped out billions in paper wealth for many peers. Saylor’s enigmatic and yet recognizable, social media post has once again ignited excitement in the cryptocurrency market and cemented his status as one of Bitcoin’s most avid institutional supporters.

The Cryptic Signal: ‘The Next Orange Dot’

Saylor, has a well-established communication style on social media, especially on the platform X, shared the chart on his recent post detailing Strategy’s considerable cumulative purchases of Bitcoin. The visual chronicle of 82 separate buying events shows the company’s holdings have swelled to a massive 640,250 BTC, a treasury currently valued in the tens of billions of dollars and sitting on significant paper gains above its aggregate cost basis.

Accompanying the chart was the punchy phrase, “The most important orange dot is always the next.” For everyone who is plugged into the corporate crypto world, this is beyond an inspirational quote; it is a tried-and-true sign of an upcoming purchase. In the past, these posts have typically come shortly before an official press release announcing multi-million dollar Bitcoin purchases by Strategy – all of which is indicative of the company’s steadfast “buy and hold” strategy as a differentiator from many of its contemporaries.

Strategy’s Leading Treasury Overhang

Consider in all market scenarios, Strategy’s Bitcoin treasury is at the top of its game. Data confirms that the company remains the undisputed global champion among corporate Bitcoin holders. With a reserve of 640,250 BTC, it makes up approximately 2.5% of Bitcoin’s total supply and is significantly larger than the treasuries of other key players. To put it another way, the most valuable public company that competes with it, Marathon Digital (MARA Holdings), is many magnitudes smaller in Bitcoin reserves, followed by other public competitors like XXI (CEP) and Metaplanet (a crypto-related company based out of Japan). Together, the top 15 public companies hold only marginally more Bitcoin than Strategy does on its own, a situation that highlights the huge impact Strategy has had on institutional adoption and prior value shifting in BTC markets.

The NAV Collapse

The suggestion from Saylor is particularly bold in light of the environment we’re currently in. The year has been difficult for corporate Bitcoin treasuries, as there was recently a report from 10x Research, “Net Asset Value Collapse,” which presented the idea that there has been a “collapse” in the Net Asset Values of the sector. The decline in Net Asset Values is evidence of the unsustainable nature of a model whereby many firms issue a share of their premised value that was significantly higher than the actual value of their underlying Bitcoin.

Analysts point out that this “boom” cycle, where companies accumulated Bitcoin by selling premium-priced equity, has seemingly “round-tripped.” As market enthusiasm has cooled, the once-sizable premiums have evaporated, leaving retail investors with substantial losses in some instances.

The Market-to-NAV Ratio Problem

A clear sign of the market correction is the decline in the market-to-Bitcoin NAV ratio. This metric compares a company’s market cap to the actual market value of its Bitcoin reserves. It means that if the ratio is less than 1.0, the market is valuing the company for less than the market value of the Bitcoin reserves and therefore fully discounting the value of the company’s operating business. For example, Metaplanet recently saw its enterprise value dip below its reported Bitcoin holdings for the first time which indicates investor skepticism with respect to the firm’s operating business and its valuation in an uncertain economy.  Strategy, while maintaining a higher ratio, has also seen its premium compress from peak levels.

The Long-Term Vision versus Short-Term Turbulence

Even amid the challenges facing the sector, Saylor’s latest communication indicates that he plans to continue treating Bitcoin as a long-term, strategic treasury asset rather than treating it as a speculative asset class. By leaning into the “next orange dot,” Strategy is once again demonstrating a high conviction, counter-cyclical approach to strategically asset allocating into Bitcoin.  To be clear, this means he is essentially betting that Bitcoin’s long-term appreciation and market potential will outlast both short term market volatility and the appetite to temporarily mark down treasury valuations. The market is now waiting to see when the next announcement will be made for an official purchase, which will inevitably interrogate Saylor’s landmark corporate Bitcoin strategy.
