In a significant leadership transition within the digital payments space, Sandeep Ghosh, Group Country Manager for India and South Asia at Visa, has stepped down from his role. The move comes as Ghosh prepares to pursue an external opportunity, marking the end of a four-year stint at one of the world’s largest payments firms.

According to a company spokesperson, the transition has been carefully planned, with Ghosh informing the organisation well in advance. His successor has already been identified, ensuring continuity in leadership at a time when digital payments adoption across India and South Asia is accelerating rapidly.

A Planned Exit, Not a Sudden Shift

Unlike abrupt leadership exits that often create uncertainty, Ghosh’s departure appears structured and strategic. Visa confirmed that the decision was communicated early, allowing the company to initiate a smooth succession process.

This approach reflects Visa’s emphasis on stability in a region that has become central to its global growth ambitions. India, in particular, is one of the fastest-growing digital payments markets in the world, driven by UPI adoption, fintech innovation, and increasing financial inclusion.

By ensuring a seamless transition, Visa is signalling that its long-term strategy for the region remains firmly intact despite the leadership change.

Driving Visa’s Growth in a Digital-First India

Ghosh joined Visa in March 2022, taking charge of operations across India and South Asia at a crucial time. The region was witnessing an explosive shift toward digital transactions, fueled by smartphone penetration, government initiatives, and a vibrant startup ecosystem.

During his tenure, Ghosh played a key role in strengthening Visa’s presence in this evolving landscape. He focused on deepening partnerships with banks, fintech firms, and merchants—an essential strategy in a market where collaboration often defines success.

Under his leadership, Visa expanded its footprint in digital payments infrastructure, while also aligning itself with emerging trends such as embedded finance and real-time payments. His efforts helped the company stay competitive in a market increasingly shaped by both global players and homegrown platforms.

A Veteran of India’s Financial Ecosystem

With nearly 35 years of experience, Ghosh brings deep expertise across banking, insurance, and consulting. Before joining Visa, he was associated with EY, where he served as Partner and Leader of the Financial Services consulting practice from 2018 to 2022.

At EY, he oversaw a phase of rapid expansion, driving significant revenue growth and scaling the firm’s advisory capabilities in financial services.

Prior to that, Ghosh held leadership roles across major institutions. He served as CEO of Bharti AXA Life Insurance from 2011 to 2017, where he led business transformation and growth initiatives. He also worked with ANZ as Managing Director and Commercial Banking Head for its APAC operations.

This diverse experience across sectors has made him one of the more seasoned leaders in India’s financial services landscape.

Leadership Philosophy: Execution Meets Adaptability

Ghosh has often described his leadership style as execution-driven and collaborative. Emphasising adaptability and resilience, he believes in navigating complex, high-growth environments with agility.

In his own words, he focuses on delivering impact through strong execution while continuously learning and evolving—qualities that have defined his career across multiple leadership roles.

This mindset proved particularly relevant during his time at Visa, where rapid changes in consumer behavior and technology required constant innovation and responsiveness.

Strong Academic Foundations

Ghosh’s academic journey laid the groundwork for his long and successful career. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of Mumbai in 1988.

He then went on to earn an MBA in Marketing and Strategy from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, one of India’s top business schools, further strengthening his expertise in business leadership and strategic thinking.

What Lies Ahead for Visa

While Visa has not yet publicly named Ghosh’s successor, the company’s confirmation that a replacement has already been identified suggests a well-managed transition.

As digital payments continue to surge across India and South Asia, the incoming leader will have the task of building on Ghosh’s foundation—driving innovation, expanding partnerships, and navigating an increasingly competitive landscape.

For Visa, the focus remains clear: sustaining growth in one of its most important global markets, even as leadership evolves.

Ghosh’s departure marks the end of a transformative chapter—but also the beginning of a new phase, both for the executive and for Visa in the region.
