Hackers Hijack Robinhood Executive’s Social Media for Million-Dollar Scam

In the fast-paced world of digital finance, executive social media accounts have become prime targets for cybercriminals. On Thursday, Robinhood Chief Executive Officer Vlad Tenev became the latest victim of a digital hijacking. Attackers compromised his X account to promote a fabricated memecoin, capitalizing on the intense speculative frenzy surrounding the brokerage’s newly launched blockchain network. This occurrence acts as a clear warning about the ongoing dangers present in the decentralized finance space.

A Brazen Social Media Hijacking

The attack was orchestrated when a false post was published on Tenev’s verified account on X about a non-existent digital token, with the name of Vladhood and trading under the alias of $VLAD. The hackers stated without scruples that the token was “official mascot of Robinhood chain,” and promised that soon it would be listed on the trading app. As a continuation of the deceit, they stated: “Does Robinhood love memes? Yes.”

The Mechanics of the Exploit

Rather than deploying a classic scam in which liquidity is drained straight away, the perpetrators opted for a more advanced scheme. Blockchain experts claim that the hacker issued the memecoin through a solution that keeps the initial liquidity locked while at the same time giving the fraudster an opportunity to pull out the collected fees continuously. The criminal employed the function of withdrawing the fees during the phone trading, which allowed him to steal around 650 Ether in total.

A Rapid Trading Surge

The fraudulent statement has had an instant financial impact. The fear of missing out on an opportunity forced ordinary investors to start buying the recently unveiled coin. In a matter of hours, the volume of transactions with the bogus $VLAD currency exceeded $21 million. The post quickly accumulated more than 175,000 views in less than twenty minutes and was able to initiate tens of thousands of swift transactions from thousands of different wallets until online detectives found out that it was actually a sophisticated scam.

Controlling the Corporate Damage

As the amount of fraudulent trades increased, the corporate team at Robinhood scrambled to handle the damage. Through its official communications channel, the company issued a warning announcing a breach of Tenev’s personal account. Robinhood assured everyone involved that they were directly working with X administrators to remove the post and restore the account. Furthermore, the administrators of the blockchain explorer quickly reported the token’s contract address as a scam.

The Growing Blockchain Landscape

The breach in security showcases just how disorganized the market is around this new technological endeavor. Since being rolled out earlier in the month, the Robinhood Chain has quickly become the center of speculative trading. The platform has garnered around $700 million in assets and enables some 10 million transactions per day. While it is clear that the platform is quite popular, the increase in the number of daily active users has created a perfect ground for scammers to actively exploit the situation around the memecoins.
