Pavel Durov Says Telegram Users Could Get Personal .gram Links

Telegram is looking to push beyond messaging with a new idea that could give its users their own personalised web addresses. Founder and CEO Pavel Durov has announced that Telegram has applied to create the .gram domain zone, potentially allowing users to claim addresses such as yourname.gram.

The proposal would need approval from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organisation responsible for coordinating the global domain name system. If approved, the initiative could give Telegram’s enormous user base a new way to create an online presence without relying on traditional website-building platforms.

Telegram Wants to Turn Usernames Into Websites

Under the proposed system, Telegram users could potentially receive their own second-level domains using the .gram extension. Instead of having a conventional domain such as yourname.com, a user could have an address like yourname.gram.

The concept could make personal websites considerably easier to create. Durov indicated that users would be able to set up interactive websites hosted by Telegram through a simple prompt, potentially reducing the technical knowledge normally required to build and maintain a website.

This could transform a Telegram username from simply an identity within the messaging platform into a broader digital identity that extends onto the web.

A Bigger Ecosystem Beyond Messaging

The proposed .gram domain is part of a broader effort to expand what Telegram can offer its users. The messaging platform has increasingly added features that go beyond basic chats, including channels, bots, mini apps, communities and other forms of digital interaction.

A dedicated domain system could take that strategy a step further by giving users a personalised destination outside the traditional Telegram interface.

For creators, businesses and online communities, a .gram address could potentially serve as a landing page, portfolio, storefront or interactive profile. Telegram could also integrate these websites with its existing ecosystem, creating a closer connection between messaging, content and the open web.

What Could Users Do With a .gram Domain?

The possibilities could extend well beyond simply displaying a profile. Users might eventually use their .gram addresses to create personal pages, showcase projects, publish content or build interactive experiences.

For businesses and creators already operating on Telegram, the system could offer a straightforward way to establish a branded web presence without purchasing a conventional domain or hiring a developer.

The most interesting element is the possibility of generating these websites through prompts. If Telegram can make the process as simple as describing what a user wants, creating a basic website could become accessible to people with little or no coding experience.

ICANN Approval Is Still Required

Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, the .gram domain is not yet guaranteed to become available.

Telegram’s application must go through the ICANN process before the proposed domain zone can be introduced into the internet’s root domain system. Until that approval is secured, users cannot assume that .gram addresses will become publicly available.

Telegram has also not revealed important details about the proposal, including when the domains could launch, how much they might cost or exactly how the underlying technical infrastructure would work.

That means much of the practical impact of the initiative remains unclear for now.

Telegram Could Be Building a New Digital Identity Layer

If approved and implemented as envisioned, .gram could become more than another domain extension. It could give Telegram a way to connect its messaging platform with personalised websites and digital identities.

The idea also reflects a broader shift in how internet platforms are approaching online presence. Instead of asking users to combine separate services for messaging, content, websites and communities, platforms are increasingly attempting to bring these functions together.

For Telegram’s billion-plus users, a personalised .gram address could eventually become a simple gateway to their online identity.

For now, however, the proposal remains subject to ICANN approval. Until more details emerge on pricing, availability and technical implementation, the biggest question is not who will get a .gram address—but what Telegram users will ultimately be able to build with one.
