GTA VI Leak Turns Into a Protest Over Digital Game Ownership

Grand Theft Auto VI is facing another security scare, but this time the alleged leak is being framed as something bigger than stolen gameplay footage. Clips reportedly showing gameplay, along with an image claiming to reveal the complete Leonida map, have appeared online just days before Rockstar Games is expected to offer fans a major official look at the highly anticipated title.

The leaked material has been linked to a group calling itself CyberLeek, which says its campaign is aimed at the wider issue of digital game ownership and preservation.

What Has Leaked From GTA VI?

Two gameplay videos reportedly circulating online show Jason, one of the game’s protagonists, in seemingly ordinary activities before the situation turns violent. One clip allegedly shows him playing basketball outside his home, while another reportedly features him driving before attacking a non-playable character.

Alongside the videos, an image claiming to show the complete map of Leonida has also spread across social media. Leonida is the fictional state in which GTA VI is set, with Vice City serving as its most prominent location.

However, Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two Interactive have not authenticated the material. Reports also suggest that copies of the alleged leaks are being removed from social media platforms, making it difficult to establish which versions, if any, are genuine.

CyberLeek Says the Leak Is a Protest

CyberLeek’s involvement has given the incident an unusual twist. Rather than presenting the leak simply as an attempt to expose unreleased content, the group has connected it to a broader campaign over how modern video games are sold, accessed and preserved.

Among its demands are an end to digital pre-orders, greater availability of physical game discs and guarantees that single-player games remain playable without an internet connection.

The group has specifically criticized the physical release plans for GTA VI and referenced The Crew, Ubisoft’s racing game that was eventually shut down. The game’s closure became one of the key examples cited by the wider Stop Killing Games movement, which campaigns against publishers making purchased games permanently inaccessible.

CyberLeek has also attempted to turn the incident into a warning for the wider gaming industry, claiming that if it can reach Rockstar, other major publishers may also be vulnerable. Its X account has additionally claimed that several more leaks could be coming.

Cryptocurrency Raises Another Red Flag

The controversy has also expanded into the cryptocurrency space. A cryptocurrency promoted alongside the leaked material has attracted attention, although online users have raised concerns that it could potentially be a scam.

That adds another layer of uncertainty to an already difficult situation. At present, it remains unclear whether the cryptocurrency is genuinely connected to the group’s campaign or is simply attempting to capitalize on the enormous attention surrounding GTA VI.

For fans, the safest approach is to treat both the leaked material and related financial promotions with caution until reliable sources confirm their authenticity.

Leak Comes Before Rockstar’s Major GTA VI Showcase

The timing could hardly be more dramatic. The alleged leak has emerged just before Rockstar’s planned presentation, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look.

Rockstar is scheduled to premiere the presentation on Netflix on August 27, 2026, at 3 p.m. ET. The same material is expected to reach Rockstar’s official YouTube channel and the GTA VI website later that day.

The upcoming showcase makes the latest leak particularly significant. If authentic, the material could reveal gameplay elements Rockstar intended to unveil itself. If fake or misleading, however, it could create confusion just as the company prepares its biggest promotional push yet.

Rockstar Has Faced GTA VI Leaks Before

This is far from the first major security incident involving GTA VI. In 2022, hackers released more than 90 videos and images from an early development build of the game.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick later described the incident as frustrating and upsetting for the development team. Rockstar’s first official trailer also leaked on X shortly before its planned December 2023 premiere, forcing the company to release the trailer early.

Rockstar disclosed another third-party data breach in April 2026, although the company said it had no impact on its organization or players.

For now, the latest GTA VI material remains unverified. But whether the clips ultimately prove authentic or not, CyberLeek’s campaign highlights a much bigger debate: when players buy a game, do they truly own it—and what happens when publishers decide to take it away?
