OpenAI Weighs Fresh Funding Round at Over $1.2 Tn Valuation Ahead of IPO

OpenAI is once again testing the appetite of private-market investors, with the ChatGPT maker holding early discussions over a fresh funding round that could value the company at more than $1.2 trillion. The potential raise comes as the artificial intelligence company prepares for a long-anticipated initial public offering (IPO), although the timing of that listing remains uncertain.

Investors Push for Fresh OpenAI Exposure

The fundraising discussions are reportedly still at an early stage and were initiated by investors rather than OpenAI itself. Any decision to proceed could depend heavily on when the company ultimately chooses to go public.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said the company’s IPO remains in the works but will not take place in 2026. A new private funding round could therefore give the company additional financial flexibility and potentially allow it to delay its public listing by another one or two quarters.

The proposed valuation would represent a major increase from OpenAI’s most recent funding milestone. The company raised $122 billion in March at an $852 billion post-money valuation, making a valuation above $1.2 trillion a substantial step up within months.

The discussions also highlight the enormous amount of capital still flowing toward leading AI companies, even as investors increasingly look toward public markets for liquidity.

OpenAI Could Use Funds for Acquisitions

A potential funding round would not necessarily be focused only on extending OpenAI’s runway ahead of an IPO. The company could also use additional capital to pursue mergers and acquisitions as it expands its technology portfolio.

OpenAI has already spent billions acquiring companies and startups across different areas of artificial intelligence and software. Its acquisitions include io, the AI device startup founded by former Apple executive Jony Ive, as well as Astral, which develops Python tools for software developers.

Fresh capital could give OpenAI greater room to pursue similar deals while continuing to spend heavily on AI model development and computing infrastructure.

The scale of its spending underscores why access to capital remains important even after its record March financing. OpenAI reportedly spent about $34 billion on AI model training in the previous year, according to reporting cited by the Financial Times.

Anthropic Raises the Competitive Stakes

The potential funding round also comes amid intensifying competition between OpenAI and Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot.

Anthropic raised funding in May at a valuation of approximately $965 billion, including the new investment. A successful OpenAI round above $1.2 trillion would put its private-market valuation above that level.

Anthropic is also preparing for an IPO of its own and has selected Nasdaq as its intended listing venue. Reports have suggested that the Claude maker could pursue a listing as soon as October, although the exact timing and terms remain subject to change.

That creates an unusual situation in which two of the world’s most closely watched AI companies are simultaneously navigating enormous private valuations while preparing for public-market scrutiny.

IPO Timing Remains a Key Question

For OpenAI, the central question is not simply whether it can raise more money, but whether another private round makes sense before going public.

The company is also considering legal restrictions surrounding what information it can share with private-market investors ahead of an IPO. That could add another layer of complexity to any potential transaction.

For existing backers, another private round could provide an opportunity to increase their exposure before OpenAI eventually lists. For the company, meanwhile, the additional capital could provide more time to invest in AI infrastructure, develop new products and pursue acquisitions without immediately relying on public markets.

With OpenAI already valued at hundreds of billions of dollars and potentially approaching the trillion-dollar-plus mark privately, its next financing decision could become one of the largest milestones in the rapidly expanding AI investment market. The eventual IPO would then offer public investors their first direct opportunity to participate in the company’s future growth.
