OpenAI is expanding its consumer hardware ambitions with the acquisition of smartphone camera technology company Glass Imaging in a deal valued at more than $300 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. The deal gives the ChatGPT maker access to advanced imaging technology developed by former Apple engineers as it explores a wider range of consumer devices.

Former Apple Engineers Behind Glass Imaging

Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, former Apple engineers who previously worked on the team responsible for Apple’s Portrait Mode. The Los Altos, California-based startup had raised around $30 million from investors before being acquired by OpenAI.

The company has developed technology designed to tackle some of the physical limitations of smartphone cameras using artificial intelligence. Rather than relying solely on conventional computational photography techniques, Glass Imaging uses neural networks trained specifically around individual camera systems.

That approach allows its technology to account for the characteristics of different cameras and smartphone configurations. The goal is to improve image quality at the point when a photograph is captured, rather than simply applying AI-based enhancements after the image has already been taken.

The technology could therefore be relevant to OpenAI as it looks beyond software and considers how artificial intelligence can be integrated directly into consumer hardware.

OpenAI Steps Up Its Hardware Ambitions

The Glass Imaging acquisition comes as OpenAI continues to expand its presence in consumer hardware. The company has reportedly been exploring products such as smartphones, earbuds and AI companion devices, suggesting that its ambitions extend beyond the ChatGPT application and AI models.

Bringing Glass Imaging into the company could provide OpenAI with expertise that would otherwise take years to develop internally. The startup’s experience in smartphone photography, camera systems and AI-based image processing could prove useful if OpenAI eventually launches a device with an advanced camera system.

The acquisition also gives OpenAI access to engineers who have previously worked on one of the smartphone industry’s most prominent camera technologies.

Jony Ive Collaboration Adds to Hardware Push

OpenAI’s hardware strategy has already been closely associated with Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer. In 2025, OpenAI acquired Ive’s company in a transaction valued at $6.5 billion, following the companies’ earlier announcement of a collaboration to develop a new AI device startup.

The Glass Imaging acquisition adds another former-Apple connection to OpenAI’s growing hardware efforts. While Ive brings extensive experience in consumer product design, Glass Imaging brings specialized expertise in smartphone cameras and computational imaging.

Together, the moves indicate how OpenAI could be assembling capabilities across different parts of the consumer electronics ecosystem as it explores what AI-first hardware might look like.

AI Could Become Central to OpenAI Devices

For OpenAI, the challenge in hardware is not simply building another smartphone or wearable device. Its broader opportunity lies in creating products where AI is integrated into the core experience rather than functioning as an additional software feature.

Camera technology could be particularly important in that strategy. Modern smartphones already use AI extensively for photography, from image processing and portrait effects to scene recognition and computational enhancement. Glass Imaging’s technology could potentially allow OpenAI to develop even more deeply integrated AI-based imaging capabilities.

The acquisition also highlights the growing importance of specialized AI technology as companies compete to bring generative AI into physical products.

OpenAI has yet to publicly comment on the reported acquisition. If completed as reported, the more-than-$300-million deal would represent another significant investment in the company’s push to establish a presence in consumer hardware alongside its rapidly expanding AI software business.

The acquisition could help OpenAI combine advanced AI with sophisticated imaging, potentially giving its future consumer devices stronger photography capabilities while deepening its presence across the hardware market.
