OpenAI is expanding its consumer hardware ambitions with the acquisition of smartphone camera technology company Glass Imaging in a deal valued at more than $300 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. The deal gives the ChatGPT maker access to advanced imaging technology developed by former Apple engineers as it explores a wider range of consumer devices.

Former Apple Engineers Behind Glass Imaging
Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, former Apple engineers who previously worked on the team responsible for Apple’s Portrait Mode. The Los Altos, California-based startup had raised around $30 million from investors before being acquired by OpenAI.
The company has developed technology designed to tackle some of the physical limitations of smartphone cameras using artificial intelligence. Rather than relying solely on conventional computational photography techniques, Glass Imaging uses neural networks trained specifically around individual camera systems.
That approach allows its technology to account for the characteristics of different cameras and smartphone configurations. The goal is to improve image quality at the point when a photograph is captured, rather than simply applying AI-based enhancements after the image has already been taken.
The technology could therefore be relevant to OpenAI as it looks beyond software and considers how artificial intelligence can be integrated directly into consumer hardware.
