China’s AI startup Manus is preparing for a major new funding round that could double its valuation to $4 billion. The company, known for building AI agents that can complete tasks on a computer with limited human input, is seeking about $500 million in fresh funding. The planned deal marks an important new stage for Manus after its complicated separation from Meta.

The proposed $500 million financing would value Manus at around $4 billion, according to reports published on September 17, 2026. The discussions are still developing, so the final amount and valuation could change before the deal closes.
If completed, the round would make Manus one of China’s most valuable companies focused on AI agents. It would also represent a sharp increase from the $2 billion valuation used when its investors bought back shares connected to Meta.
The company has not identified the new investors involved in the latest talks. Existing backers include Tencent, HSG, and ZhenFund, which have continued supporting the business.
What Is Manus AI?
Manus is designed around the idea of an AI agent rather than a simple chatbot. Instead of only answering questions, an AI agent can plan a task, use software, browse information, and carry out several steps toward a goal.
Manus focuses on general-purpose computer tasks. Users can give it instructions and allow the system to handle work automatically. This approach has attracted attention because it points toward AI systems that can act more like digital assistants than traditional chatbots.
The startup was founded in China and later moved much of its staff to Singapore after receiving backing from Silicon Valley investment firm Benchmark. Its global focus has helped Manus attract interest outside its home market.
The Meta Connection
Manus became closely linked with Meta after the technology company agreed to acquire the startup in a deal reportedly worth about $2 billion. The agreement followed rapid growth in Manus and strong interest in its AI-agent technology.
However, the relationship did not last. Chinese authorities ordered the company to separate from Meta, creating a difficult situation for the startup. The operational split was completed in May 2026.
After the separation, Manus resumed independent operations. The company also stopped sharing data with its former parent and said its founding team would remain in charge of the business.
The founders and existing investors later bought back shares from Meta at the same $2 billion valuation. Tencent became Manus’s largest external investor after acquiring the stake that had previously belonged to Benchmark.
Why The New Valuation Matters
The proposed $4 billion valuation is significant because Manus is returning to the fundraising market after a period of major corporate and regulatory changes. Raising $500 million would give the company additional capital to develop its products and expand its international operations.
The timing is also important for the wider AI industry. Investors are increasingly interested in AI agents because these systems could automate complicated tasks rather than simply generate text or images.
At the same time, AI companies face strong competition. Foundation models are improving quickly, while businesses are looking for systems that can provide useful results at reasonable costs. Manus therefore needs to show that its agent technology can become a sustainable business.
Could Manus Go Public?
A successful $4 billion funding round could give Manus more options for its future. One possibility discussed in connection with the company’s growth is a public listing in Hong Kong.
An IPO would provide another way to raise capital and could give early investors an eventual path to sell their holdings. However, there is no confirmed listing plan, and the funding discussions remain the immediate focus.
For now, Manus is attempting to build a new chapter as an independent company. Its proposed $500 million funding round, if completed at the reported valuation, would show that investors remain interested in the future of AI agents despite the uncertainty surrounding the sector.
