Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has signed an agreement linked to a proposed $32 billion data centre development in Queensland, Australia, marking a major potential investment in the country’s expanding digital infrastructure sector.

The project is expected to support the growing demand for computing power as businesses, governments and consumers increasingly adopt artificial intelligence. With AI systems requiring substantial processing capacity, technology companies are investing in large-scale facilities capable of handling vast numbers of requests.

The proposed development near Dalby, in Queensland’s Western Downs region, has attracted attention because of its size, economic implications and potential impact on the state’s energy infrastructure.

A Major Investment in Regional Queensland

The data centre is being developed by Singapore-based company Zerra DC. The planned facility is part of a broader effort to establish Queensland as a destination for large-scale digital infrastructure and technology investment.

The proposed campus is expected to have a capacity of approximately 2.1 gigawatts, placing it among the largest planned data centre developments in Australia. Its construction would involve significant investment in land development, electrical infrastructure, cooling systems and telecommunications.

The agreement with Anthropic is expected to support the company’s Claude artificial intelligence services. Claude is used for a range of tasks, including writing, coding, research and business assistance.

For Queensland, the development could create opportunities for construction contractors, engineers, electricians, technology specialists and other service providers. Regional businesses may also benefit from increased demand for accommodation, transport and supporting services during the construction phase.

However, the scale of the economic benefits will depend on the project’s progress, financing arrangements and eventual operational capacity.

Meeting the Demand for AI Computing

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence has created a global race to secure computing infrastructure. AI models require powerful processors and extensive data centre facilities to operate efficiently, particularly when serving large numbers of users.

Anthropic’s proposed Queensland arrangement reflects the increasing importance of regional computing capacity. Establishing infrastructure closer to users can support service delivery and help companies expand their presence in international markets.

The facility is expected to focus on AI inference, the process through which trained AI models generate responses to user requests. This differs from model training, which involves developing and refining the underlying systems.

Inference operations are central to the everyday use of AI assistants and other applications. As demand for these services increases, companies need reliable computing capacity, electricity supplies and cooling systems to maintain performance.

The Queensland project could therefore form part of Anthropic’s wider infrastructure strategy as it expands its Claude services.

Electricity Requirements Raise Questions

One of the most significant challenges associated with the proposed development is its electricity demand. A data centre with a capacity measured in gigawatts requires substantial power to operate servers, networking equipment and cooling infrastructure.

The project is expected to connect to the Braemar power station and related electricity infrastructure. Such a connection would require careful planning to ensure that the facility can receive the power it needs while maintaining the reliability of the wider electricity network.

Queensland’s energy system includes coal-fired generation as well as an expanding renewable energy sector. The development has consequently raised questions about how the state will accommodate energy-intensive industries while managing household demand and broader energy transition goals.

The developer’s plans for securing electricity and funding necessary infrastructure upgrades will be important to the project’s long-term viability.

Environmental and Water Considerations

Large-scale data centres can have significant environmental requirements. In addition to electricity consumption, they require land, cooling systems and infrastructure capable of operating continuously.

Cooling is particularly important because servers generate considerable heat during operation. Conventional cooling systems can consume substantial amounts of water, creating challenges in regions where water resources are limited.

The proposed Queensland facility is expected to use an air-cooled, closed-loop system designed to reduce its reliance on clean water for cooling. The environmental performance of the project will nevertheless depend on its final design, energy sources and operating practices.

The development may also require assessments of land use, construction activity, traffic and potential effects on nearby communities.

These considerations are likely to remain important as Queensland authorities evaluate the project’s planning and infrastructure requirements.

Regulatory Approvals Still Required

Although the agreement represents a major step in the proposed development, construction and operations remain subject to relevant approvals.

The project must proceed through applicable Queensland planning and development processes. Foreign investment considerations may also apply because of the involvement of international companies.

The approval process will help determine whether the development meets requirements relating to infrastructure, land use and environmental management. The timeline for construction could change depending on the outcome of these processes, financing arrangements and the delivery of necessary power connections.

The project is expected to be developed in stages, with the first stage potentially beginning operations in 2027.

Australia Seeks a Larger Role in AI

Anthropic’s investment agreement comes as Australia seeks to strengthen its position in the global technology economy. The country has attracted interest from companies looking to develop data centres, cloud infrastructure and AI-related services.

Australia offers established infrastructure, a developed economy and opportunities for large-scale projects outside traditional technology hubs. Its location also makes it relevant to companies seeking to serve customers across the Asia-Pacific region.

For Queensland, attracting AI infrastructure could support economic diversification and encourage investment in technical skills and supporting industries.

At the same time, the expansion of data centres presents challenges involving electricity supply, environmental management and the distribution of economic benefits.

What the Agreement Means

The proposed $32 billion Queensland data centre represents a significant development in Australia’s AI infrastructure ambitions. For Anthropic, the arrangement could provide additional capacity to support its growing Claude services and regional operations.

For Queensland, the project offers the prospect of substantial investment and employment opportunities, while raising important questions about energy demand, environmental impact and infrastructure planning.

As the development moves through the approval and construction process, attention will focus on its financing, power arrangements, environmental safeguards and operational timeline.

The agreement highlights the growing scale of the artificial intelligence industry and the infrastructure required to support it. It also demonstrates how the expansion of AI is reaching beyond major technology centres, bringing new opportunities and challenges to regional communities in Australia.
