Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo is facing early durability concerns after owners reported cracks developing along its inner display’s hinge, in some cases after only limited use. The complaints, emerging within weeks of the foldable smartphone’s October 2026 launch, have raised questions about its hinge design and the resilience of its flexible screen.
One Australian owner reportedly experienced a display crack after opening the device fewer than 20 times, approximately six hours after purchasing it. According to MacRumors, the user felt something beneath the screen near the hinge before hearing a crack and noticing damage along the central fold. The device was reportedly replaced at an Apple Store, although Apple has not publicly confirmed the incident.

iPhone Duo Screen Cracks Reported Across Markets
Reports of cracks and bright lines appearing along the iPhone Duo’s central crease have surfaced across multiple markets, including China and Australia.
Some images circulating online reportedly show damaged display panels, although the usage history of certain demonstration units remains unclear. This makes it difficult to determine whether the incidents resulted from ordinary use, accidental damage or other factors.
The timing is particularly notable given the device’s premium price. At $1,999, the iPhone Duo occupies the high end of the smartphone market, where buyers would reasonably expect reliable performance and durability.
However, the growing number of online complaints does not establish how frequently these failures occur. Without verified sales figures, confirmed repair records and a reliable denominator, it remains unclear whether the reports represent isolated incidents or a broader hardware problem.
Independent Testing Raises Hinge Durability Questions
Independent durability testing has added to concerns surrounding the foldable iPhone’s construction.
JerryRigEverything’s Zach Nelson reportedly found that dust could enter the hinge mechanism despite the device’s IP68 rating. Subsequent testing also documented inner-display damage under bending stress, with damage appearing around the central hinge area.
These observations have raised questions about whether particles entering the hinge could contribute to pressure on the flexible display during repeated opening and closing.
However, the precise cause of the reported owner failures remains unconfirmed. A destructive bending test also differs substantially from normal everyday use, meaning the results alone cannot establish that the phone will fail under ordinary conditions.
The IP68 rating indicates protection against specified dust and water exposure under controlled testing conditions. It should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every internal mechanism is immune to particle ingress or damage.
Warranty Coverage and What Owners Should Know
For owners experiencing cracks, bright lines or unusual resistance around the hinge, documenting the damage and contacting Apple promptly would be prudent.
Some early reports suggest that display failures attributed to manufacturing defects may qualify for replacement under Apple’s standard warranty. However, coverage depends on the company’s assessment of the individual device, and accidental or other excluded damage may be treated differently.
Owners should also avoid forcing the hinge or attempting to remove debris from inside the mechanism themselves.

What the Evidence Reveals So Far
The reports raise legitimate durability questions, but a systemic design defect has not yet been established. There is currently no confirmed failure rate demonstrating how widespread the issue is, nor sufficient evidence to conclude that the iPhone Duo fails more frequently than competing foldable smartphones.
Claims about unusually high manufacturing rejection rates or attempts to suppress complaints also remain unverified.
Apple has not publicly announced a service bulletin or expanded replacement programme addressing the reported failures. Until more reliable evidence emerges, the central question is whether the hinge-related damage reflects isolated incidents or a reproducible weakness in the device’s design.
For a foldable smartphone costing nearly $2,000, how well its inner display withstands everyday use will be crucial to maintaining consumer confidence.
