Artificial intelligence company Anthropic reported a massive 1,127% year-on-year increase in revenue to $17 billion in the September quarter of 2026. However, the rapid expansion of its AI business has come with significantly higher infrastructure expenses, pushing the company back into an operating loss and highlighting the enormous costs associated with scaling artificial intelligence.
In an updated registration statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as part of its proposed initial public offering (IPO), Anthropic reported an operating loss of $567 million for the three months ended September 30. This marked a sharp reversal from the operating income of $974 million recorded in the preceding quarter.
The company attributed the change primarily to rising computing expenses, particularly the cost of securing additional infrastructure through short-term commitments.

Anthropic’s computing expenses surge amid growing AI demand
Anthropic said it had secured approximately $5 billion worth of computing capacity through short-term agreements during the September quarter. These arrangements were significantly more expensive than the multi-year contracts it typically uses to procure computing resources.
The company also recorded $2 billion in non-cash charges related to its donation-matching programme, further affecting its financial performance.
Anthropic explained that demand for its AI products had consistently exceeded the computing capacity available to it. This shortage has forced the company to rely increasingly on more expensive infrastructure arrangements to meet customer requirements.
Computing and infrastructure expenses climbed 382% year-on-year to $9.9 billion in the September quarter, considerably outpacing the company’s revenue growth.
Despite the operating loss, Anthropic reported an increase in adjusted operating income to $2.5 billion from $2.2 billion in the June quarter. However, its adjusted operating margin declined from 19% to 15%, indicating growing pressure on profitability.
Anthropic reports $104 billion net loss in first nine months of 2026
For the first nine months of 2026, Anthropic’s revenue increased to $33.2 billion, compared with $2.5 billion during the corresponding period last year.
Its operating loss narrowed significantly to $1.3 billion from $5.2 billion a year earlier. However, the company’s net loss for the September quarter stood at $23.3 billion, taking its cumulative net loss for the nine-month period to $104 billion.
A substantial portion of these losses was attributable to accounting adjustments rather than regular business operations. Anthropic recorded a $94.3 billion non-cash charge arising from changes in the fair value of convertible notes and other financial instruments, primarily following an increase in the company’s valuation.
The filing also revealed the scale of Anthropic’s long-term infrastructure commitments. Its aggregate computing and infrastructure purchase and lease obligations stood at approximately $895.4 billion, of which around $447.5 billion is expected to be incurred before December 2030.
Anthropic warns of continued pressure from AI infrastructure costs
Anthropic expects its operating margins to fluctuate as additional computing capacity becomes available and associated expenses are recognised.
The company also indicated that its dependence on short-term computing arrangements could increase in the near future, potentially keeping infrastructure costs elevated.
The financial disclosures highlight a major challenge facing leading AI companies: converting rapidly growing demand into sustainable profitability while securing the computing resources needed to develop and operate increasingly advanced models.

Anthropic prepares for Nasdaq IPO under ticker symbol ANT
The updated registration statement forms part of Anthropic’s proposed IPO, through which the company plans to offer shares of its Class A common stock to public investors. Existing shareholders are also expected to sell additional shares as part of the offering.
Anthropic has applied to list its Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the proposed ticker symbol ANT.
According to the filing, no public market for Anthropic’s shares existed before the offering. The share sale is expected to begin as soon as practicable after the registration statement becomes effective.
With revenue growing rapidly but infrastructure commitments approaching $900 billion, Anthropic’s IPO could offer investors a closer look at the economics of building large-scale AI businesses. Its ability to manage computing costs while maintaining growth will be crucial to determining whether its expanding revenue base can translate into sustainable long-term profitability.
