Accenture considers selling China unit in $1.5 bn deal

IT consulting giant Accenture is exploring a potential sale of its Chinese operations for up to $1.5 billion, as the company evaluates strategic options for its business in the region. The proposed transaction could attract interest from private equity firms and a select group of strategic buyers, according to a Financial Times report published on Sunday.

The report, citing people familiar with the matter, said Accenture has hired JPMorgan to advise on a strategic review of its China business. The move follows unsolicited interest in the unit over the past year, prompting the consulting firm to assess the possibility of a sale.

Neither Accenture nor JPMorgan immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment outside regular business hours.

While a sale could mark a significant change in Accenture’s regional operations, the company has not publicly confirmed a final decision. The review remains ongoing, and the eventual structure of any transaction has yet to be determined.

Accenture may retain minority stake after sale

According to the report, Accenture could consider retaining a significant minority stake in the business even if it proceeds with a sale. Such an arrangement would allow the company to reduce its ownership while maintaining a financial interest in the operations.

The potential transaction is expected to draw attention from private equity groups looking for investment opportunities, alongside a limited number of strategic buyers that may be interested in expanding their consulting and technology services presence in the region.

However, the sale process is still at an exploratory stage, and there is no confirmed timeline for a transaction. The final valuation and ownership structure would depend on negotiations with potential buyers and the outcome of the strategic review.

Accenture’s Greater China operations cover mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, according to information on the company’s website. The geographical scope of the business makes the proposed sale relevant to its wider presence across the region.

A transaction valued at up to $1.5 billion would represent a substantial divestment, although the reported figure remains a potential valuation rather than a confirmed sale price.

Strategic review comes amid changing business priorities

The potential sale comes as global consulting and technology services companies assess their operating structures, investment priorities and exposure to different markets.

For Accenture, reviewing its Chinese operations could provide an opportunity to reconsider how the business fits within its broader portfolio. The unsolicited interest reported over the past year may also have encouraged the company to evaluate whether a sale could unlock value from the unit.

A transaction involving private equity investors could result in a change in ownership while allowing the business to continue operating under a different corporate structure. Alternatively, a strategic buyer could seek to integrate the operations into an existing consulting or technology services platform.

However, neither a buyer nor the terms of a potential transaction have been identified publicly in the information reported so far.

The review also does not necessarily mean Accenture will exit the Chinese market entirely. If the company retains a significant minority stake, it could continue to have an economic interest in the business following a sale.

Accenture raises outlook for fiscal 2027

The reported divestment discussions come as Accenture maintains a positive outlook for its broader business. The company recently forecast revenue growth of between 3% and 6% for full-year fiscal 2027, exceeding analysts’ expectations.

The forecast provides a wider financial context for the potential sale, although there has been no confirmed indication that the transaction is directly linked to the company’s revenue outlook.

The proposed divestment could reshape Accenture’s ownership of its Greater China operations, depending on the outcome of the review. For prospective buyers, the business could offer an established presence across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

For now, the process remains exploratory. Accenture’s decision on whether to proceed, the level of ownership it may retain and the identity of any successful bidder will determine the ultimate implications of the potential $1.5 billion transaction.
