Amazon Cuts Up to 250 Jobs in Devices and Services Unit Amid Efficiency Push

Amazon has eliminated up to 250 jobs in its devices and services division, adding to a growing wave of workforce reductions at the technology giant. The cuts come just weeks after the company rolled out new Kindle e-readers and tablet computers, highlighting how product expansion can coincide with organisational restructuring.

The company confirmed the layoffs on Wednesday, October 28, following an inquiry from Reuters. While Amazon described the decision as affecting a small number of employees, a person familiar with the matter said the cuts impacted no more than 250 workers, primarily in software development.

“We’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles,” an Amazon spokesperson said, without providing further details about the affected teams or the employees involved.

The company said the move would help it operate more efficiently and align its workforce with its product roadmap, suggesting that the restructuring is part of a broader effort to streamline operations and allocate resources according to its evolving priorities.

Amazon Restructures Devices Business Amid Product Launches

The layoffs arrive at an interesting point for Amazon’s devices and services business, which has continued introducing new products across its consumer electronics portfolio.

In recent weeks, the company has unveiled new Kindle e-readers and tablet computers, expanding its offerings in categories that have become central to its consumer technology ecosystem. On Wednesday, Amazon also announced a new alarm clock and photo frame powered by Alexa, its voice-based artificial intelligence assistant.

Despite these launches, the latest job cuts indicate that product development and workforce expansion are not necessarily moving in the same direction. Companies can continue investing in new devices while reorganising engineering teams, eliminating overlapping responsibilities and adjusting staffing levels to reflect changing business priorities.

Software development accounted for the majority of the reported reductions, according to the person familiar with the matter. However, Amazon has not publicly identified the specific teams affected or explained whether the changes will influence the development timelines of upcoming products.

Employees were informed of the decision early Wednesday morning through text messages and emails, following the company’s established approach to communicating workforce reductions.

One message reviewed by Reuters came from Cherie Robinson, a human resources vice president in the devices and services division. Robinson said the company had conducted “a thorough review of our structure” before determining that job cuts were necessary.

Retail Division Also Faced Job Cuts Earlier This Month

The latest reductions follow another round of layoffs at Amazon earlier in October, when the company cut approximately 1,000 jobs, primarily in its core retail division.

Taken together, the two rounds of cuts point to continued workforce adjustments across different parts of Amazon’s business. The company has been reassessing its organisational structure as it balances operational efficiency with investments in technology, consumer products and artificial intelligence.

However, the available details do not establish whether the latest devices and services layoffs are directly connected to the earlier retail cuts or represent separate restructuring decisions.

For employees, the reductions underscore the uncertainty facing workers even in established technology businesses that continue to launch products and develop new services. For Amazon, the challenge will be to achieve its stated efficiency goals without disrupting the teams responsible for maintaining and expanding its consumer technology ecosystem.

Amazon’s Third-Quarter Earnings in Focus

The timing of the layoffs also puts Amazon’s upcoming financial results in focus. The company is scheduled to report its third-quarter earnings after the market closes on Thursday, October 29.

The results could provide investors with a clearer picture of the company’s financial performance and management’s priorities across its major business segments. Although Amazon has not disclosed how much the latest workforce reductions are expected to save, the stated objective of improving efficiency makes operating costs and resource allocation important areas to watch.

Investors will also be looking for indications of how the company intends to balance spending on new devices, Alexa-powered services and other technology initiatives against its profitability goals.

For now, Amazon has offered limited information about the scope of the restructuring beyond confirming the elimination of a small number of positions. Whether the latest cuts represent an isolated adjustment within the devices division or part of a wider effort to reshape its workforce may become clearer as the company outlines its financial performance and business priorities.

With new products continuing to reach consumers even as jobs disappear behind the scenes, Amazon’s latest move illustrates the difficult balance between innovation, organisational efficiency and workforce stability in the technology industry.
