With the introduction of Trainium and Inferentia, Amazon strives to outpace Nvidia in the AI chip market. On July 26th, a team of dedicated engineers tested a new server design, showcasing Amazon’s advancements in AI chip technology. Rami Sinno, an Amazon executive, highlighted the importance of this development during a visit to the facility. The new server uses Amazon’s custom AI chips, marking a significant step towards competing with Nvidia, the current leader in the field.

The primary motivation behind Amazon’s chip development is to reduce reliance on Nvidia. Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company’s most significant growth driver, heavily depends on Nvidia’s costly chips. By creating its own processors, Amazon aims to cut costs and avoid the so-called “Nvidia tax.” This strategy aligns with broader trends in the tech industry, as companies like Microsoft and Alphabet also develop custom chips to maintain market leadership.

Sinno, director of engineering for Amazon’s Annapurna Labs, emphasized the growing demand for affordable alternatives to Nvidia’s products. Acquired in 2015, Annapurna Labs has been instrumental in Amazon’s chip development efforts. Amazon’s AI chips are still in the early stages, but the company has a decade-long history of producing and refining chips for mainstream applications. The Graviton chip, now in its fourth generation, is one such success story. Amazon’s latest chips, Trainium and Inferentia, are designed specifically for AI applications.

Potential Impact and Savings

David Brown, vice president of compute and networking at AWS, reported that Amazon’s in-house chips could offer a 40-50% improvement in price-performance ratio compared to Nvidia-based solutions. This could lead to significant savings for AWS customers running AI workloads. AWS is a crucial part of Amazon’s business, contributing nearly a fifth of the company’s total revenue. In the first quarter of this year, AWS sales rose by 17% to $25 billion. AWS controls about a third of the global cloud computing market, while Microsoft’s Azure holds approximately 25%.

During the recent Prime Day, Amazon showcased its commitment to custom chips by deploying 250,000 Graviton chips and 80,000 custom AI chips. This helped manage the increased demand for shopping, streaming video, music, and other content.

Adobe Analytics reported record Prime Day sales of $14.2 billion, underscoring the effectiveness of Amazon’s chip strategy. In deploying 250,000 Graviton chips on Prime Day, Amazon strives to outpace Nvidia in handling peak demand efficiently.

Competition with Nvidia

This move not only positions Amazon as a strong contender in the AI chip market but also reflects a broader industry trend of tech giants investing heavily in custom chip development.

As Amazon advances its AI chip development, Nvidia is also pushing forward. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced the upcoming Blackwell chips, which promise twice the performance for AI model training and five times the speed for inference.

Nvidia’s strong position in the AI chip market is evident, with a client list that includes Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Meta. The company’s focus on AI has driven its market value to $2 trillion, making it the third most valuable company globally, behind Microsoft and Apple.

Expanding Offerings

Nvidia is diversifying its offerings, introducing new software tools to facilitate AI integration across various industries. The company is also developing specialized chips for emerging applications, such as in-car chatbots and humanoid robots. Brown noted that Amazon’s new chips could provide up to 50% better price performance, potentially making them half as expensive as Nvidia’s solutions. By aiming for a 50% improvement in price-performance, Amazon strives to outpace Nvidia in offering better value to its customers.

Amazon’s foray into AI chip development is a strategic effort to enhance its cloud services and offer more competitive pricing. By reducing dependence on Nvidia and creating high-performance, cost-effective AI chips, Amazon aims to maintain its competitive edge in the cloud computing market and drive growth in its AWS division.
