Anthropic is pouring millions of dollars into a major advertising push during the National Football League’s championship game, using one of television’s biggest stages to challenge rival OpenAI and its reported plans to introduce advertising into ChatGPT. The campaign represents one of the most public and direct confrontations yet between two of the leading companies shaping the artificial intelligence industry.

At the center of Anthropic’s strategy is a 30-second commercial scheduled to air on NBC during Super Bowl LX. The ad is designed to highlight concerns about advertising inside AI chatbots and to position Anthropic’s assistant, Claude, as an alternative that promises an uninterrupted user experience. By choosing the Super Bowl, Anthropic is ensuring that its message reaches one of the largest audiences of the year.

The championship game is expected to attract around 120 million viewers, with the Seattle Seahawks set to face the New England Patriots in Santa Clara, California. Advertising slots during the broadcast are among the most expensive on television. NBCUniversal’s global advertising leadership has indicated that the average price of a 30-second Super Bowl commercial is roughly $8 million, with some premium placements exceeding $10 million. NBCUniversal is owned by Comcast.

Humor-Focused Ad Questions the Future of Ads in AI

Anthropic’s commercial uses a lighthearted scenario to make its point. The ad features a young man exercising in a park who asks a muscular stranger for advice on building six-pack abs. The stranger responds in a mechanical, chatbot-like manner and offers to create a personalized training plan. Before doing so, he awkwardly inserts a sales pitch for shoe inserts, leaving the young man confused.

The closing message emphasizes that while advertising may soon become part of some AI tools, Anthropic is presenting Claude as a chatbot that will remain free from such interruptions. Through humor, the company is attempting to spark a broader conversation about how commercial interests could shape user interactions with artificial intelligence.

This marks the first time Anthropic’s Claude has been featured in a Super Bowl advertising campaign. The company is using the moment to build brand recognition and distinguish itself in a rapidly expanding market for consumer AI assistants.

OpenAI Responds While Promoting Its Own Technology

OpenAI has pushed back against the implications of Anthropic’s campaign. Company leadership has publicly characterized the ad’s message as misleading and emphasized that OpenAI is mindful of how advertising decisions could affect user trust and product adoption.

At the same time, OpenAI is using the Super Bowl to promote Codex, its software coding product. Rather than focusing on the debate over advertising in chatbots, OpenAI’s commercial effort highlights practical applications of its technology and its usefulness for developers and everyday users.

The exchange underscores the growing intensity of competition between the two firms. Both companies are working to expand their reach, attract new customers, and establish leadership positions in a fast-moving industry where brand perception can play a crucial role.

Battle for Users, Clients, and Investment

The advertising clash reflects deeper strategic pressures facing Anthropic and OpenAI. Neither company is currently profitable, and both are investing heavily in growth. They are competing not only for consumer attention but also for enterprise clients that rely on AI tools for business operations.

In addition, both firms are reportedly exploring public offerings as early as this year. Potential stock market listings would place them in direct competition for investor interest and capital. A high-visibility platform like the Super Bowl offers a rare opportunity to strengthen brand identity ahead of any future fundraising efforts.

Public relations analysts note that the dispute illustrates how even highly technical companies engage in traditional corporate rivalry. The public nature of the exchange is likely to raise awareness of both Claude and ChatGPT, drawing more attention to AI assistants in general.

Shaping Public Attitudes Toward Artificial Intelligence

Advertising experts say the Super Bowl campaigns are not only about competing with each other but also about influencing how the public views artificial intelligence. Surveys suggest that many Americans remain uncertain or cautious about AI’s long-term impact on society.

For AI companies, the challenge is to present their products in a way that feels accessible and trustworthy to a broad audience. Messaging that is too technical or overly aggressive risks alienating viewers who may have limited experience with AI tools. By placing chatbots in familiar, everyday situations, advertisers hope to make the technology appear more approachable.

The Super Bowl’s enormous reach provides a unique opportunity to normalize AI and demonstrate how it can fit into daily life. Both Anthropic and OpenAI are attempting to use storytelling and relatable scenarios to reduce skepticism and encourage experimentation with their platforms.

Mixed Early Feedback From Industry Observers

OpenAI has previously experimented with television advertising to raise awareness of ChatGPT, including commercials that frame the chatbot as a supportive companion for everyday challenges. Industry observers say the company is still refining its approach to storytelling and brand messaging.

Anthropic’s Super Bowl ad has also generated mixed reactions in early consumer testing, according to advertising measurement firms. While the humorous critique of competitors may capture attention, such direct comparisons can divide audiences and spark debate.
