Apple Delays Next-Gen CarPlay Launch: What We Know So Far

Apple has officially announced that its much-anticipated next-generation CarPlay will not debut in 2024 as previously expected. This update comes after the company quietly removed the 2024 launch timeline from its CarPlay webpage, leaving tech enthusiasts and automakers speculating about when the feature will arrive.

A Brief History of Next-Gen CarPlay

The next-generation CarPlay was first unveiled in 2022, promising a more integrated and seamless in-car experience. The system is designed to span across multiple screens, providing deeper integration with vehicle controls, including climate settings, speedometer displays, and infotainment systems.

However, updates from Apple regarding this innovation have been infrequent. Leading automakers like Porsche and Aston Martin had initially committed to adopting the technology but have yet to confirm launch dates. Meanwhile, other brands like Ford and Mercedes have hesitated, and companies such as General Motors and Rivian have opted out entirely, prioritizing their proprietary systems.

Indications of Progress

Despite the delays, Apple has provided some subtle hints that progress is underway:

  1. iOS Beta References: The iOS 18.3 beta, released in late 2024, includes references to next-gen CarPlay, suggesting that software development is advancing.
  2. EU Database Filings: Apple has recently filed updated images of the new CarPlay system in an EU database, which may indicate ongoing regulatory processes.
  3. Collaboration with Automakers: Apple has reiterated its commitment to working closely with car manufacturers, stating, “Each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will support the next generation of CarPlay.”

What’s Next?

While a revised timeline remains elusive, the next-gen CarPlay is still on track to redefine in-car technology when it finally launches. Apple is reportedly aligning its efforts with automakers to ensure a smooth rollout. For now, enthusiasts will have to wait for official announcements from both Apple and its automotive partners.
