Apple has officially pulled the plug on its Clips video editing app, marking the end of a seven-year chapter for the company’s answer to quick, social video creation. Clips first launched in 2017, offering fun filters, AR effects, dynamic text overlays, and intuitive editing tools targeted at users eager to produce bite-sized videos for social sharing. Its design anticipated the rapid growth of vertical, short-form content, aiming to help iPhone and iPad owners create viral clips without the complexity of broader software like iMovie or Final Cut Pro. Despite regular updates and integration with Apple’s camera and gallery, Clips failed to capture mainstream appeal, remaining a niche tool for a dedicated but limited user base.

Social Media Platforms Render Clips Redundant:

The popularity of TikTok, Instagram Reels, and other like sites has significantly reduced the importance of Clips. AI-driven effects, collaborative editing, fast social sharing, and direct connection with international communities are just a few of the sophisticated video editing tools that these social apps now come with built-in, well beyond what Apple’s standalone app could give. Users gravitated toward platforms where editing was effortlessly integrated into the experience and where published material could reach an audience right away. As a result, Clips found it more difficult to compete; instead of exporting projects using Apple’s tools, most users resorted to editing on TikTok or Instagram.

Apple Guides Users To Transition And Focuses On Hardware-Driven Creativity:

Apple has withdrawn Clips from the program Store and advises users to back up their projects to Photos or other storage options, even if support for the program will remain “for the time being” on iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 devices. The business highlights ongoing investment in its hardware-driven creation ecosystem, from AI-powered picture editing and professional-grade tools in Final Cut Pro to enhanced camera capabilities in new iPhones, signaling a final phase-out. Apple’s change acknowledges that consumers now expect editing capabilities as essential components of their preferred social media apps rather than as stand-alone third-party choices.

Emerging Trends in Video Editing for 2025:

In 2025, mobile video editing is strongly driven by artificial intelligence, with creators using AI-powered tools for automated scene detection, smart cropping, and instant audio cleanup. Vertical video optimization has become a standard, as TikTok, Reels, and YouTube Shorts demand portrait-oriented editing for engaging, mobile-first experiences. Color grading is now more expressive and cinematic, with editors employing stylized palettes and bold LUTs to define mood and story. Dynamic motion graphics and kinetic typography are also prominent, with animated texts and liquid transitions grabbing viewers’ attention in fast-paced social videos. Immersive formats like 360° video and augmented reality overlays have begun transforming storytelling, making interactivity a key part of content engagement. As AI editing tools become more accessible and personalized, small creators, brands, and agencies are able to produce professional-grade videos designed specifically for platform algorithms and on-the-go consumption. These trends are shaping not only the tools but the aesthetics and expectations of mobile-first content creation worldwide.

The Changing Landscape of Mobile Video Editing:

Apple’s move to sunset Clips reflects broader changes in how people make and share video content. Today’s users prioritize direct integration with social platforms, rapid sharing, and innovative features powered by AI and seamless cloud storage. As Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat race ahead with sophisticated creation tools, standalone apps like Clips simply can’t keep pace. By focusing its development energy on hardware and professional-level creative suites, Apple is adapting to user habits shaped by social media dominance. For long-time Clips fans, the end serves as a reminder to export any remaining projects before the app fades from memory.
