PM Modi and Anthropic CEO Discuss Responsible AI Amidst Firm's India Expansion Plans

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a remarkable conversation with Dario Amodei, the CEO at Anthropic, about the future of AI in India. The event had a piece of good news attached to it: Anthropic is opening up its first facility in the country in Bengaluru, with the city serving as its headquarters.

The announcement is a milestone in India’s history with AI and places the country at the center as a crucial player in the world map of AI. The entry into India is more than geographic expansion for Anthropic it is also a matter of getting a foothold into one of the world’s most active technology ecosystems.

The discussion between Modi and Amodei was focused on responsible AI construction and how new technologies can meaningfully benefit India’s huge citizenry. Both leaders stressed collaborating on AI technologies that are compatible with India’s democratic values and morals while making sure that such innovations really benefit common individuals.

He emphasized the unique Indian strengths: a skilled, young citizenry and a growing IT sector that is already a force globally. He announced that the response to AI can’t be permitted to be a technological or technical challenge alone, with technological progress not coming at the cost of the health of society.

These opinions were reflected by Amodei, too, as he stated that how India implements AI across key sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture for a population exceeding a billion will essentially define the AI future across the globe. Due to the sheer scale which India invests at, implementation that is successful here can act as a guideline for other countries.

Anthropic to Open First Outpost in Bengaluru by Early 2026

Anthropic’s choice to open its first outpost in Bengaluru is an entirely logical one. Bengaluru was long referred to as the technology capital of India due to a sheer plethora of startup companies, mature technology titans, and abundant engineering skills. The new facility is scheduled to open in early 2026.

The month is particularly interesting given that India has been adopting Anthropic’s lead product, Claude, at a record-shattering speed. The country has already become the second-largest market for the firm.

Most remarkable is the five-fold expansion in Claude Code adoption that has been observed since June 2025, evidencing strong demand among developers in India.

Anthropic is not the only one that spots the potential in India. The company that has investors such as Google and Amazon is following a trail already blazed by other giant A/I firms. OpenAI and others are either opening or intending to have a bigger presence in India, with them competing for a slice of the country’s tremendously immense market.

Anthropic and India: A Partnership for Responsible AI Innovation

As one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing digital communities, with almost a billion internet users, India is a prime opportunity for innovation and growth. With a huge user base and a government promoting responsible AI adoption, this is a fertile breeding ground for innovation and growth.

Another running thread throughout the conversations was the focus on responsible and safe AI development. Modi and Amodei both insisted that innovation and safeguards must coexist in order to ensure the protection of societal well-being. This commonality in values is perhaps why Anthropic views India as a potential star partner.

He was most enthusiastic about the proactive approach to India’s AI policy, noting the effort to achieve a balanced scale-up with responsible regulation. The focus is not just a rapid adoption of AI, but on delivering the benefits across society.

Anthropic opening a branch is not just another multinational opening a subsidiary in India. It is a testament to the infrastructure the nation has developed for AI and its future potential to become a leader in responsible AI innovation. Having a vision to harness AI across the education, health, and agriculture sectors has a huge potential to transform the lives of millions.

PM Modi Meets Anthropic CEO as ‘Claude Code’ Use Explodes in India

PM Modi’s remark after the meet was optimistic about this tie-up: “Glad to meet you. India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation that is human-centric and responsible.”

Earlier, Amodei said he met Prime Minister Modi to discuss Anthropic’s expansion to India, where the use of its product ‘Claude Code’ has witnessed a five-fold increase since June.

“Today I met with PM @narendramodi to discuss Anthropic’s expansion to India – where Claude Code use is up 5x since June. How India deploys AI across critical sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture for over a billion people will be essential in shaping the future of AI,” Amodei said.

As multinational corporations with a focus on AI begin to look at India with increased interest, the country stands at an exhilarating crossroads. With due diligence, India can become not just a major consumer of AI technologies, but a power in developing and deploying AI that is positively inclusive for society across the board.
