Apple Inc. is making a bold new push in the music streaming industry, seeking to reclaim ground lost to rivals like Spotify. In a partnership announced Wednesday, Apple will distribute its curated radio stations through TuneIn, a global digital radio platform with more than 75 million monthly active users.

This marks the first time Apple’s in-house radio stations will be available outside of its Apple Music app ecosystem, signaling a shift in strategy as the company looks to broaden its reach and attract new listeners.

Apple’s First Expansion Beyond Its Walled Garden

Historically, Apple has relied heavily on its own ecosystem to promote services such as Apple Music, keeping features tightly bound to iPhones, Macs, and other Apple devices. The partnership with TuneIn, however, represents a departure from this strategy.

With the deal, Apple’s six curated stations which include Apple Music 1, Apple Music Hits, and Apple Music Country will now be streamed on millions of non-Apple devices supported by TuneIn. These include smart speakers, connected cars, gaming consoles, and third-party headphones.

The move gives Apple exposure to a much wider audience beyond its core customer base, opening the door to listeners who may not own an iPhone or subscribe to Apple Music.

Competition Heats Up in the Streaming Wars

Apple’s radio expansion comes at a critical time. The global music streaming industry has grown fiercely competitive, with platforms fighting for attention not just through music, but also podcasts, videos, and interactive experiences.

According to MIDiA Research, Apple’s U.S. market share of digital music subscriptions has slipped to 25% by the end of 2023, down from 30% in 2020. In contrast, Spotify has expanded its dominance, leveraging formats like video podcasts, audiobooks, and interactive playlists to build deeper engagement.

This erosion in market share has raised alarms at Apple, a company known for maintaining tight control of its user experience. The TuneIn partnership underscores Apple’s willingness to explore new channels to remain relevant in a fast-evolving streaming landscape.

The TuneIn Advantage

For Apple, TuneIn offers a significant distribution advantage. With 75 million active users across 122 countries, TuneIn has become a global hub for radio, podcasts, and live streaming. The platform is integrated into leading smart devices, such as Amazon’s Alexa, Sonos speakers, Tesla cars, and gaming systems like Xbox.

“Apple approached us about this tie-up late last year,” TuneIn CEO Richard Stern told reporters, noting that the deal aligns both companies’ goals of expanding access to high-quality audio content.

By distributing Apple’s curated radio stations through TuneIn, Apple gains access to millions of listeners worldwide who might never download the Apple Music app or pay for a subscription upfront. This increased exposure could serve as a funnel, converting casual listeners into paid Apple Music subscribers over time.

Apple Music was launched in 2015 with the aim of competing head-to-head with Spotify. It has since built a strong subscriber base, estimated at over 100 million paid users globally. However, its growth has slowed compared to Spotify, which boasts more than 250 million premium subscribers and over 600 million total users.

Unlike Spotify, which has leaned into podcasts and new audio formats, Apple Music has doubled down on human curation. Its radio stations are helmed by renowned DJs, music experts, and artists, offering a more personalized touch than algorithm-driven playlists. Apple hopes this differentiator now available to TuneIn’s vast audience will reignite interest in its music platform.

Radio as Apple’s Differentiator

Apple’s renewed emphasis on radio highlights the company’s belief in the enduring appeal of curated, human-driven programming. While streaming has largely been dominated by on-demand playlists, radio brings a sense of discovery, community, and real-time cultural relevance.

Stations like Apple Music 1 have become known for exclusive artist interviews, album launches, and curated experiences that often feel like events. By distributing this content through TuneIn, Apple is betting that it can introduce new listeners to its brand of storytelling and eventually convert them into loyal subscribers.

Apple’s decision also reflects broader shifts in consumer behavior. Spotify has successfully positioned itself as more than a music app, it’s a multi-format audio platform with exclusive podcasts and video content. Amazon, too, has invested heavily in integrating music and podcasts into its Alexa ecosystem.

For Apple, expanding the reach of its radio stations through TuneIn is part of a larger strategy to differentiate its brand through quality and curation, rather than competing solely on scale or pricing.

While the TuneIn partnership could boost visibility, questions remain about whether Apple can close the gap with Spotify and other rivals. Spotify’s early lead in podcasts and its aggressive push into new media formats gives it a broader base of engagement. Apple, meanwhile, has faced criticism for being too reliant on its hardware ecosystem and slower to innovate in streaming features.

Moreover, it’s unclear how Apple plans to monetize this new distribution channel. Will the TuneIn stations remain free and ad-supported, or will they push aggressively toward Apple Music subscriptions? Striking the right balance between accessibility and conversion will be critical.

Apple’s partnership with TuneIn is more than just a distribution deal, it’s a signal that the company recognizes the need to adapt in a fast-changing streaming market. By expanding its radio programming to a wider audience, Apple hopes to reassert itself as a major force in global music streaming and regain momentum against rivals like Spotify.

Whether this move is enough to reverse Apple’s market share decline remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: in the streaming wars, Apple is no longer content to sit on the sidelines. With TuneIn, it has tuned into a broader audience and the battle for listeners is only just beginning.
