When your beloved iPhone takes an unexpected dive into water, the instinctive move for many has been to reach for a bag of rice. However, recent support documentation from Apple is urging users to rethink this age-old solution. It turns out, the grainy remedy might not be as effective as once thought, and could even spell trouble for your device.

Where Did the Rice Trick Come From?

Believe it or not, the idea of using rice to dry out electronic gadgets isn’t a recent phenomenon. In fact, it traces its roots all the way back to 1946. Over time, it became a widely circulated folk remedy for salvaging waterlogged gadgets, including cameras and smartphones. But despite its popularity, experts have long cast doubts on its efficacy. Research has shown that uncooked rice might not speed up the drying process and could potentially cause further harm to your device.

What Apple Says

Apple’s latest support note is clear: don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice. According to the tech giant, doing so could introduce tiny rice particles into your device, leading to potential damage. Instead, they’re offering users a step-by-step guide for handling water-related mishaps.

– Immediate Response: If you find your iPhone swimming in unexpected waters, the first step is to unplug the charging cable and gently tap the device to remove excess liquid. Then, leave it in a well-ventilated area to dry for at least 30 minutes.
– Testing the Waters: After ensuring your phone and cable are completely dry, you can attempt to charge the device again. If it doesn’t cooperate, Apple advises waiting another day before trying again.
– Words of Caution: Apple also warns against using external heat sources or compressed air for drying and advises against inserting foreign objects into the charging port.

What to Do Instead

For iPhones that are completely unresponsive due to water exposure, Apple recommends immediately shutting down the device and avoiding any button presses. The next steps involve drying the device with a towel and placing it in an airtight container with silica packets, if available, to absorb moisture. Charging should only be attempted once you’re certain the device is completely dry.

The Reality of Water Resistance

While newer iPhone models boast improved water resistance capabilities, liquid damage is still a concern for users. Despite technological advancements, accidents happen, and it’s essential to take proper precautions to safeguard your device.

In essence, the tradition of using rice to rescue waterlogged iPhones is losing its credibility, courtesy of Apple’s recent advice. Instead, users are encouraged to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for dealing with water damage. By avoiding rice and adhering to Apple’s recommendations, you can better protect your iPhone from the perils of liquid exposure and extend its lifespan.
