I’m sure like most out there, if you woke up today to check your account balance to only find out that your account resembled a zero balance. Yes, zero. It was a technical hitch from none other than Bank of America. This is a nightmare, which thousands of customers across the U.S. had on October 2nd, 2024, when Bank of America’s service messed up.
Here is all we know so far about the outage and what you should be looking for in the future.
A Gift for Thousands of Clients
A survey conducted by downdetector indicates that more than twenty thousand Bank of America customers were affected. At approximately 1:00 PM, matters started heating up when everybody started reporting problems while logging into their accounts. Not insignificant glitches either, but many users were somehow stuck seeing a balance of $0.
Some customers could not log into the system at all while others saw balances dated the previous day hence compounding their plight.
What Caused the Outage?
But Bank of America remained very clear on what exactly had created the confusion in the first place. Although, they agreed with the problem and said that ‘Some of the clients have raised a concern of being unable to login into their accounts and check their balances’. They only said it was being worked on and that most services had resumed.
Social Media Panic
Like in every other modern day calamity, people took to social media to off steam. Complaints began pouring in on Twitter, coupled with screenshots of their empty balances, unresponsive apps. Some reported the bank never responded to them, while others said that CSC was not all that enthusiastic in solving issues. On Downdetector, one angry user put it: “Both the app and browser access remain partially down.” Another continued, “They can view some of the accounts but the transfer feature is still a no show.”
While having a balance of zero is nothing to be ashamed of, it may be frustrating to feel like your bank isn’t listening to you.
The Bank’s Response
Owing to the high number of customer complaints, Bank of America resorted to releasing a statement through CNN. They said sorry for the inconvenience they had caused me.
If it sounds familiar, that’s because Bank of America went through the same thing back in August last year. While that was going on, customers were also welcomed to zero balances in their accounts. But maybe receiving that zero balance statement makes you ponder about life.
What’s Next?
While Bank of America stated most problems have been addressed, there remains doubt as to how long it will take for everything to get back to usual. While some of the customers have been able to log back into their accounts some of the account functions such as transferring between accounts are still disabled.
Krebs said that for those affected by the outage, their best course of action is to continue to monitor their account and any alerts they receive from the bank. And if your balance still remains a big fat zero, then, you at least know that it must be a mistake.
In Conclusion
Such outages are annoying but they also make us realize how much we rely on technology – or rather how much we rely on it when it comes to handling our money. Although Bank of America has most of the problem sorted, there is still evidence that it has a few pieces left to go before it can be fully recovered. Therefore, the next time you log on to your bank statement, let’s hope that everything is fine again.
