Block Hated Ads Reddit’s New Control Feature

Block Hated Ads Reddit's New Control Feature

Reddit has announced a new feature allowing users to block specific advertisers for a year, attempting to balance its growing emphasis on advertisement revenue with user satisfaction. The announcement came through a post by a Reddit employee known as “cozy_sheets,” detailing the upcoming change that will roll out across the platform’s website and mobile apps over the next several weeks.

The new functionality works simply: when users click “Hide” on an unwanted advertisement, Reddit will automatically prevent future ads from that same advertiser account for at least 12 months. After this period expires, users can renew the block by hiding the ad again if it reappears.

This move represents Reddit’s acknowledgment of user frustration with irrelevant or unwanted advertising content.

According to the company representative, the feature was developed in response to users demanding “more control over the ads they see” during their Reddit experience.

While the feature gives users greater control over their ad experience, Reddit hasn’t specified what limitations will prevent users from blocking all advertisers to create an ad-free environment. Some community members have already reported encountering daily limits on hiding advertisements.

Reddit Users Gain More Ad Control, But Ads Still Expected to Rise

The announcement comes at a critical time for Reddit, which went public approximately a year ago and has since intensified its focus on advertising revenue. In 2024, advertising constituted an impressive 92 percent of Reddit’s revenue, showing 60 percent growth compared to the previous year.

Beyond simply hiding advertisements, Reddit’s spokesperson noted that users can also “report” ads they believe violate platform policies, which similarly results in blocking that advertiser for a year. This dual approach aims to both improve user experience and maintain content standards across the platform.

Reddit already offers some controls over advertising content, including options to block ads related to sensitive categories such as alcohol, dating, gambling, politics, religion, pregnancy, and weight loss.

However, the effectiveness of these controls has been questioned by some users who report continued exposure to blocked content categories.

Reddit to Increase Ads, Offers Limited Blocking

The platform also allows users in the United States and select other countries to disable personalized advertisements, though this option was made mandatory in certain geographic regions back in September 2023.

Despite these user controls, Reddit users should prepare for an increasing ad presence in the coming years.

Company executives have indicated plans to expand advertising into comment sections and implement more contextual advertising based on surrounding content. These strategies align with Reddit’s broader monetization goals following its public offering.

The company’s crackdown on third-party applications has made avoiding these advertisements increasingly difficult, as users now have fewer alternatives to Reddit’s official website and apps.

This shift represents a significant change from just a few years ago when various unofficial Reddit clients offered ad-free or ad-reduced experiences.

This balancing act between monetization needs and user experience highlights the challenges facing social media platforms as they transition from growth-focused companies to profit-driven public entities.

Reddit’s approach of offering limited blocking capabilities while expanding its advertising footprint demonstrates its attempt to satisfy both shareholders and its notoriously vocal user community.

As the feature rolls out over the coming weeks, Reddit users will gain this additional tool to customize their experience, even as the platform continues its broader push toward increased advertising presence across all aspects of the service.
