In a recent message to all Boeing employees, President and CEO Dave Calhoun addressed the aftermath of the Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 accident and announced significant leadership changes within the company.

Calhoun acknowledged the gravity of the Alaska Airlines accident and emphasized the need for humility, transparency, and a renewed commitment to safety and quality across all levels of Boeing. This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of maintaining the highest standards in aviation.

Reflecting on Company Progress

Despite recent challenges, Calhoun expressed confidence in Boeing’s ability to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger. He commended employees for their dedication and highlighted the collective effort to rebuild Boeing over the past five years, underscoring the company’s resilience and determination.

Boeing CEO Transition Announcement

In a significant announcement, Dave Calhoun revealed that this would be his last year as CEO of Boeing. He explained that the decision was made after careful consideration and discussions with the board of directors. Calhoun’s tenure as CEO has been marked by a commitment to addressing the company’s challenges head-on, and he expressed his desire to see Boeing return to stability and recovery before stepping down.

Dave Calhoun outlined a series of leadership changes within Boeing, including the transition of Larry Kellner from his role as board chair and the appointment of Steve Mollenkopf as his successor. The CEO selection process will be led by Mollenkopf, ensuring continuity and a smooth transition of leadership.

Calhoun expressed gratitude to Larry Kellner for his outstanding leadership and contributions to Boeing over the years. Kellner’s efforts in strengthening governance and establishing the board aerospace safety committee have been instrumental in enhancing the company’s operations and oversight.

Boeing: Welcoming the New Chair

Steve Mollenkopf’s appointment as board chair was met with praise from Calhoun, who highlighted Mollenkopf’s extensive experience and valuable contributions to the company since joining the board. Mollenkopf’s background as an engineer and former CEO of Qualcomm positions him well to lead Boeing through its next phase of growth and development.

In addition to changes at the board level, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stan Deal announced his retirement. Stephanie Pope, with nearly 30 years of experience at Boeing, including successful leadership roles, will assume the leadership of the BCA business. Calhoun expressed confidence in Pope’s ability to lead the commercial airplanes business and drive its success.

Commitment to Safety and Quality

As Boeing navigates this period of transition, Calhoun reassured employees of the company’s unwavering focus on safety and quality. He emphasized the importance of completing the work to return Boeing to stability and recovery, with safety remaining a top priority in every aspect of the company’s operations.

In conclusion, the CEO message underscores the company’s commitment to safety, quality, and responsible leadership amid challenges and transitions. With a renewed focus on these core values, the company aims to emerge stronger and more resilient, ready to tackle future opportunities and challenges in the aerospace industry.
